I can really see where gjm is coming from. Heres my view from a strictly business point of view that I came to earlier in the night. Consider the cost of goods sold on software, its all mainly in research and development. Some of that can be capitalized, which means the company isn't just spending money on paying people to produce this stuff, its also getting a long term benefit from it. Anyway, the biggest cost they will incur, is right now, all the research, promotion, development, after that, it doesn't cost them anything to slap the software on a cd, thats peanuts and most of us just download it anyway. So right now, more then ever, Ableton needs the money, they need to cover these base costs. For whatever reason, they must be hurting too, because getting rid of educational upgrade discounts is a risk. Look at how many people its outraged, but at this point they assume that the benefit of a less paying the higher price will outweigh the majority of us paying a lower one, you'd have to see the numbers for sure. If anything, we will all likely find a way to upgrade if we can whether it be a crack or not, or just end up paying the premium. One things is for sure, when I upgrade, I better lose my educational status! Anyway, that being said, the price will come down regardless, it always does, eventually they will cover their initial cost and it will all be gravy from there, apart from the typical costs of running a business. This is simply smart business, they know we want it, and 60% will pay it. unfortunately many will crack, and a small number might even move away from Ableton. Anyway, the discount is gone, so at this point lets all start looking for a temporary second job, and I mean, ive got suite 7, I definitely do not need suite 8, live 8 will do fine just fine so theres a few dollars saved. (really, latin percussion?)

For all those who come in here and tell us to stop moaning and all that shit, STFU. This is a great way to show Ableton we don't support this decision and you'd do the exact same thing if you were in our shoes, and if not, you'd be a moron. Its also a great way to vent and come to the realization that a good thing is gone and maybe we can convince them politely in the future to bring it back. I'm admitting defeat.

I'm in too.
I bought Live 7 because there was an educational price, and because my students could have this discount too. I'm not going to work with software that students can not afford.
so no future work with ableton live as a teacher.
I will use sensomusic usine, wich is free.
I'm really think that ableton make a mistake with this. me and a lot of my friend begin with live because we use it as students.
hopes they will change their policy.

anyway, I found that's a great update,so I will update with the actual price , althought I'm not very happy with this. ableton doesn't help teachers and students in my opinion and that's not a good news.

Being both a poor teacher and poor student, I request 2 discounts :| would that be possible ?
or maybe 3 as I'm student in 2 different areas.
that'd be cool guys.

by now I unfortunately lack a few bucks to buy 8 suite. not mentioning MFL and a week abroad to get some training to use it.

I also wanted to upgrade from Live 6. The EDU-ppgrade-price to Live 7 was 69 Euro. I hoped it would be now around 89-99 Euro, but now this shock. Don´t have now 200 Euro. :(

I'd like to see an Education/Academic upgrade price as well! Why would they not have this?

A Live Lite 7 user who is also a student should also get a discounted price to step up to Live 8 or Live 8 Suite as well.

Come one let's have it Ableton!

Hmmm...this is a shock! I WAS struggling with the decision between upgrading to Live 8 or getting Pro Tools 8 M Powered EDUCATIONAL (because I am doing an audio technical production course at college which includes Pro Tools). Pro tools 8 M powered (for those who have an M-Audio device) is selling for as low as US$149 !!!!!!!! I thought, after discovering that this pro tools edu price existed, that I might be able to get both but alas, this is now a problem!

Sadly, I am now going to settle for Pro tools as I can't afford both now! (I have Live 5 : I was looking forward to finally upgrading )...

another teacher here. i'm not here to threaten ableton or whine but simply state what the lack of EDU discount will mean for me and my students

i'll continue to teach with live as it's the best tool for the job. it's also the tool i use personally. i couldn't really live with myself teaching with second rate work around software. i can still get new students 50% off the initial purchase price which is still an excellent deal.

i'm a fanboy, it's almost creepy, and this influences students in my courses to buy live. in the end i will update to V8 regardless of price. at the moment no EDU discount simply means it will take me longer to get into V8. the flow on effect of abletons decision for my courses is simply that students wont get tuition on V8 as soon as they would of if there was still and EDU discount.

so yes +1...but it's not the end of the world
