Live 8 Suite - authorization again after already authorized

Post by arachnaut » Sat Apr 04, 2009 5:13 pm

I just started Live 8.0.1 (Suite) on my PC (WinXP SP3). It asked me to authorize it again.
I ran it many times already, I don't know why it is asking this a second time.

There is a slight difference in machine configuration - I enabled the ethernet port on my local network.
I usually keep that port disabled. It is connected to a Mac Book Pro that has
Live 8 installed (and authorized, but not running).

that's what it is,
the etherenet port.
they included it in their hardware key.
daft isn't it.

I mentioned this during the beta (as did others) that people often turn off their ethernet at a gig.
at which point they will get a horrible surprise.

yes, if you generate an ableton live hardware code before you enable your ethernet port ableton will ask you to authorize again. apparently live requests MAC addresses (and has a micro database stored with the hardware information where hardware changes obviously are logged and traced as some type of magical "activation code" events) of the ethernet cards at startup although the activation process has already generated a hardware code without the inclusion of the ethernet card´s MAC address. disable your ethernet port and start live, it will not ask you to authorize again. but live will ask you to authorize again everytime the ethernet port will be enabled.

or better: generate a new ableton live hardware code with ethernet enabled.

So what is the solution to this? To just do the simple Online Activation method instead of using one of the diff ones where you don't have the internet connected?

Anyway, Ableton added another unlock after I made the request.

Hi guys,

With 8.0.1, we did a slight change in the way the network adapter
counts as part of the hardware code to make life easier for those
who only temporarily connect a USB network adapter for unlocking
and then remove it again. USB adapters on PC are simply ignored.

Any other non-USB hardware adapter is used to compute the
hardware code, and disabling an adapter is the same as physically
removing it from the computer for that purpose.

The good news is:

1. Live will save any hardware code with which you have performed
the authorization. This means that if you authorize it once with
the (non-USB) network adapter enabled, and once with it disabled,
Live should no longer require you to authorize.

2. If you happen to be out of unlocks, you get an email right away,
and if you write us at support@ableton.com explaining
your situation, you will most certainly get an additional unlock.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Carl

Indeed, I wondered why I had to authorize twice... But now it works either with enabled or disabled network adapter.

Many apologies for hijacking this thread, however, since you are from Ableton headquarters I feel justified asking you a question that I believe needs answering officially.

What are your plans for fixing the many bugs still being reported in the official release of Live 8?

I think it's a great update, however, it's obviously not quite there yet and therefore I am not 100% keen on buying it until it's either made stable or you have announced some form of regular bug-fixing plans in order to make it stable in the shortest time possible. I don't want to have to wait several months until any problems I may come across are rectified as like many others, I may as well just stick with 7.

As you can probably see, I have already started a thread in regards to this but it has not yet been answered by Ableton and I think it justifies some form of official response.

Look forward to reading a reply.

i also mentioned it (authorising twice) in the beta, and had to do a second unlock on my desktop last night; i think when my phone is connected (a se w910i) it counts as another/extra nic...

Hi pwal,

Interesting! does your SE W910i appear as a USB network adapter,
or does it use some other bus? Do you use it as such, or only for
playing back MP3s?

I've had to unlock the Suite twice, because Live 8 refused to launch, had to reinstall and everything, and the previous unlock that I saved for the reinstall, did not work on the
new install (serious program error after launch).

Fact is, I did not change/add anything to the system. It has two ethernet cards, only one connected, and two firewire busses (one for soundcard, one for Liquidmix), xp sees them as network devices. But nothing has been changed. Go figure, but in my case Ableton support worked great!

hi carl - when connected in "phone mode" a new nic shows up in device manager: "Sony Ericsson Device 117 USB Etherhet Emulation (NDIS 5)"

i don't use the nic functionality, but syncronise contacts & mp3s
