Mac mini
Encased in brushed metal, the new Mac mini features a square shape with rounded edges and is somewhat similar in appearance to an Apple AC power adapter. It features a slot-loading CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo drive, USB 2.0, FireWire 400, DVI and VGA connectivity and a headphone jack.
Jobs describes the Mac mini and BYODKM: Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard and Mouse. The Mac mini works just fine with Apple's peripherals, of course, or you can use other industry-standard peripherals.
The Mac mini comes in two models -- a 1.25GHz, 40GB G4 system for $499 and an 80GB 1.42GHz G4 system for $599. Both are coming on January 22, 2005.

the iPod shuffle
Apple's latest digital music device, the iPod shuffle, is shaped like a long, thin rectangle with beveled edges. It has a headphone jack on the top. Clad in white with a grey button interface laid out similarly to the iPod and iPod mini's clickwheel. It measures smaller than a pack of gum and weighs less than four quarters. Available in 512MB for US$99, or 1GB for $149.

what do you guys really think? spec wise? I really dig the form factor and I'd love to replace my 12" Powerbook with it. I know it's not cutting edge tech but it really would not cut into my wallet. pretty cool stuff.

i think that the machines look ideal for gigging with a portable tft and fire interface. pretty usefull.
I usually only ever use audio clips rather than vstis when gigging so power wise it should be enough.

but

i will wait for Pb G5

Well, considering that up until a couple of months ago I was working with a G4 400 I'd say this would be a nice little critter to have around. It's obviously not going to set any speed records, does come with a nice little software bundle though.

yeah, i know the specs. I was just wondering what everyone's first impressions are. I know it's better than my powerbook (for the most part). And yes, I'd rather wait for a G5 powerbook. But, I'd buy a mini for home use without a doubt.

2 x 6.5 x 6.5"

but the PSU is 1.5 x 3 x 6.5 lol

pretty cool stuff though.
i'm researching the possibility of controlling it KVM style with another laptop.
turn it into an external DSP, would be great for powerbook users. almost like a dual processor. but still dunno if its possible.

Those would be cool as Logic Pro 7 nodes, but also as a portable Live rig, or a standalone Reaktor box... ah, who cares, I'll take one two three four five six seven of 'em!

And they use PC keyboards and mice, too. Nice touch.

what can i say hehe
it looks like Timbuktu Pro will allow remote control between Macs and PCs and i've heard its relatively snappy (i.e. it aint Virtual PC). Researching if its possible to use it via firewire to get 4x the bandwidth versus Ethernet.

what this could do is allow you to basically run OSX on a PC - in a roundabout way. Using the PC to control the MacMini staying in OSX for Live.. and using a Mac/cross-platform equivalent to FX Teleport to harness the PC's power, but never really having to use Windows.

its an interesting concept, and it would take alot of tweaking. but where there's a will there's a way. I'll see if i can't test the concept with my g/f's ibook later on in the week.

If you already have a monitor or will pick up a CRT for cheap then this Mac Mini is very reasonable solution. Ultra ATA, DVD Burner/CDRW standard, DVI and SVGA. :) :) :)
