incompatible with remote desktop?

Ableton Live is the only program ive ever found to be incompatible with XP's Remote Desktop. The image is quite distorted, you sometimes see a few lines of the display mixed in odd colors and stretched across the length of the screen, or something to that effect. I have not used 2.0 so i am curious if the problem has been fixed yet. I was thinking about buying Live but i normally use a laptop remotedesktop'd via 802.11b to a much faster PC which contains the actual audio card, a much faster hd, connections to amp etc.

Also noticed flicker problems on BOTH pc's. the AMD with a recent Asus board and Nvidia card, and the thinkpad with ATI mobility. All the menus in every other app flicker, except when LIVE is minimized. Basically system performance improves quite a bit when live (1.52) is not drawing on screen. It seems clear some shady stuff was done on a low level to get a cross platform uniform GUI, at the expense of some compatibility and performance...

So if the flicker is gone, and 2.0 works in remote desktop, i'll be first in line to buy it, if not, i'll just take the extra 2 seconds to "manually" stretch stuff to tempo in SX....thanx for any info

suppose i should have tried out 2.0 before posting, just installed it and while it fixed the flicker and remote desktop problems, the program will not launch when other rewire apps are loaded. not sure if this is deliberately disabled in the demo of 2.0, or is a bug or what. oh well, maybe i will check this app out by 3.0 or so...seems silly to pay $399 for something that can do maybe 20% of the stuff sx can while the only thing which is faster is timestretching/pitchshifting (turn a dial vs wait maybe 1 or 2 seconds as an edit is dropped to disk)

why the hell u running live via remotedesktop ???

and u cant compare live to cubase -- its different kind of software.

Very strange approach you got there...

...but I assume you know why you are doing this.
I also assume you did never check out LIVE in sort of normal environment. It's worth a try, at least before judging and comparing...

Sorry, two things I forgot to mention:

1. Rewire slave capabilities are not present in 2.0b1 (file under http://www.ableton.com/beta/problems.html, remember it is beta still!)
2. There were problems in 1.5.1 with dual-monitor support on XP reported. As far as I know remote-desktop functionality in XP, there could be the relation to your problem. Hopefully fixed with 2.0.

youre right, comparing it to a program that has been around much longer is not totally fair, i just hope that beyond 2.0 features added to LIVE arent merely to "catch up" with the established sequencers, but continue to branch out in new ways to continue to redefine the possibilities of composition, real-time or otherwise.

anyways, tried out beta2 and both the video flickering and rewire problems seem to have been fixed. good to see a company that actually listens to their users...i wont tell you how long i waited for a few answers from another more "magic"-al company out there, despite the fact that i am a paying user of their product..

format...yes that is me. i didnt bother to post the results of our mac.vs.pc performance showdown here beacuse it looks like everyone here already realize that macs have fallen way behind in system performance relative to pc's in the last couple years

Mmm, interesting idea to use a remote desktop sw ... will try this with VNC, connecting my old Thinkpad 486/100 (think there is a 1 floppy VNC linux version) to my Athlon 1Ghz win2000 box)

Tried it out, connecting a celeron 366 laptop running win2000 with vnc client to an athlon desktop with the audiogoodies, running vnc-server (http://www.realvnc.com) ... it works .... but there is too much lag in my lan setup (running over a 3com hub) ... if there is a way to improve the lag , it could make an older laptop usefull again , maybe even more in a studio setting in my eyes, allowing access to the central-daw

I had the requirement to actually do some bouncedowns one evening and I was using RDC at the time. Live was loaded, but as soon as I saw it I remembered that the last time it looked allweird.

Basically Using RDC (Remote Desktop Client) on XP does work with Live.. just that the hi desktop rez my pc was running in was a lot higher than what RDC worked at when using my laptop..

Simple fix was to match the desktop rez. of the pc where live was installed to the laptop and whalla..

I could safely export some 18 track parts from the comfort of my front room whilst my girlfriend was in bed all ready for the morning to burn onto DVD.. The .wavs NOT my girlfriend re: all ready to burn bit.

anyways, I'm done..
