ableton needs to be half the price
Re: ableton needs to be half the price
i don't think it's to expensive.
and funny enough, i know a lot of prfessionel companies / people who don't take Live serious,
because of it's cheap pricing...
go figure.

Yes but logic includes lots of very good proprietary instruments and FX (sory if this has been said in the topic but haven't got time to scroll through 6 pages...)bpoteat wrote:That comparison should be using Live 8 base, not Suite. Not only has it been said, I basically retracted the statement just a bit later.madlab wrote:Yes but logic includes lots of very good proprietary instruments and FX (sory if this has been said in the topic but haven't got time to scroll through 6 pages...)bpoteat wrote: That comparison should be using Live 8 base, not Suite. Now, I'm slightly embarrassed I had any part in this monstrosity of a thread.

Just bought Ableton 8, It has been working fine till now, on a Mac at least....
Ableton 8 || Apple iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM
Re: ableton needs to be half the price
Right, it's a yearly subscription model. I get that now. The actual value of using Live for a year is $30 and the rest is just a premium we pay for the privilege of being Live users. Now that I understand, I'll never make the mistake of skipping a version again. Silly me for thinking that buying 4 versions of the software over the space of 5 years somehow counted as being a loyal supporter.Machinesworking wrote:Customers that buy all their upgrades are basically giving them money a year or more earlier than you are, there is value in that. Re: ableton needs to be half the price
Again, you're whining about a business model. Live upgrades have always been cheaper for people who had the latest released version, unlike DP, and slightly more restrictively than Logic. Also, your $30 amount is off. You pay $249 for a download upgrade from 6, I pay $159, that's a $90 difference, not $30. Had you bought Live 7, you would have paid only $30 more than you will now. This isn't the same, you've had $119 in your pocket for the last year while Ableton has had my $119.melocoton wrote:Right, it's a yearly subscription model. I get that now. There are PC Logic users now who cannot get a dime to upgrade to Logic 8 who bought 1-5 loyally. This isn't some uncommon model. I think both upgrade prices are too high, but the value difference is purely subjective on your part. In a way I think it's overtly generous of MOTU to give me the same price to upgrade as someone who loyally kept DP running through the dark ages of OS9 OSX transitions etc. I think if they hadn't had hardware sales, DP would be no more.
I agree that they need to stop gouging us for upgrades if we want to stay current every year, especially since now the cost at $189 without discount from 7, which I assume will be close to the price next time, is roughly the same as Logic and DP, probably close to Cubase and Sonar as well.

the coupon is only a pittance. but ya I'd pursue one too IF I was going to be spending money with them anyways. Have you emailed them (sorry if you did and I missed it) ? I'd be surprised if they didn't make room for your snout in the coupon trough.melocoton wrote:Right, it's a yearly subscription model. I get that now. I emailed them yesterday but have not heard back yet. I didn't know about the coupon until I read about it here. I also went back and looked through the last 4 or 5 news letters and nothing there. I am sure they are just extremely busy right now.b0unce wrote:the coupon is only a pittance. but ya I'd pursue one too IF I was going to be spending money with them anyways. Re: ableton needs to be half the price
Seriously, this whiney-ness is ridiculous. The sheer volume of whining threads about the price, coupons, etc is insane.
If you can't afford it, that is unfortunate. I hope that your financial situation permits you to save money and buy it soon.
If you think it's too expensive, don't buy it. Vote with your dollars and send a clearly written email to Ableton explaining why.
I am not sure what happened to our culture, but all of a sudden everyone seems to think they DESERVE to get exactly what they want exactly when they want it. Sorry folks, maybe this global recession will remind us that sometimes you have to work for things, save for things, or imagines - do without things.
I feel like an old man but when I started DJing, I couldn't afford technics. I couldn't even afford Geminis, so I practiced on my friends Geminis. Then I helped him pay for a pair of technics, which I shared. Eventually, some 5 years after I started djing, I had saved up enough money from gigs and NOT buying other stuff to afford my own Technics. I love them. I value them. Do I wish they were cheaper? Yes. Do I wish I had them earlier? Yes. Should they have been cheaper. Maybe yes, it was the 90's at that time they had been on the market for almost 20 years. Back then companies didn't really interact with their consumers, their were no forums to whine on - so you know what I did, I did without, saved, and eventually got what I wanted.
Grow up.
Lastly, why not tell Sony that you bought a PS1 and a PS2 therefore you should get a discount on a PS3? Why not tell Apple that you have had an iMac, iBook and maybe an old Quadra so you should get a discount on a Macbook? Oh yeah - you wouldn't.
Seriously, grow up.
Sorry, my one ranting response to the 8 billion threads full of whining.

Re: ableton needs to be half the price
The way I see it Live has become a luxury item. It's more expensive than it's competitors because it has something unique to offer in the form of session view and the "warpy stuff" (I believe that's the technical term used in Ableton HQ). If you need to use these features, then you need to pay the premium. If you don't need to use them, then buy another DAW.
Live 7, Logic Studio 8, Mac Pro 8-core/2.26/6GB, OS X 10.5.6, Saffire Pro 40, Alesis M1 Active 520s, Remote SL 37, Virus TI Snow, Nord Rack 2, Zebra 2, Sylenth1
Re: ableton needs to be half the price
So when do we get the rebate coupon? On the count of it being so expensive and all.

Yeah, I know it's only a pittance, it was the principal of it that made me mad -- the idea that someone who came aboard with version 6 is a longtime user but I'm not. But it's cool, I'm actually totally over it by now. In fact I'm thinking of going for the suite upgrade since the basic upgrade is so expensive anyway, I may as well just pay the extra $150 and get all of the other stuff.

much respect deserved for this post. sometimes you have to be the bad guy to make a point get across to everyone.
Re: ableton needs to be half the price
I think Live 8 price should be 199 $ (Logic Express price)
and Suite may be 399 - 499 $
Right now I'am using warezed version cos I can't afford it, but for 200$ I would consider it buying. Suite is better priced if you need the stuff included (and have the money) but I don't need it.
And the update price should be no more than 59$ for sure (for non Suite)
So you can view it from this angle too. Lot's of ppl use warezed Live, coz Abes jack up prices to high. If they would make it more reasonable, more new buyers would appear.
And yes, Operator and Sampler should be included in Live non-suite version.
Or they should make smth like non-commercial discount, that would make Live twice cheaper for non-commercial use
and Suite may be 399 - 499 $
