Fraid I won't be able to make it to your gig TONIGHT AT THE SAPPHIRE LOUNGE OPPOSITE VICTORIA STATION, LONDON, details on your website, UKRuss. But I'll definitely try to get to the next one. Hope it goes well.

Shouldn't you be rehearsing, anyway?

And now, back to the troll-fest...

I'm still in disbelief that someone really gets so offended by an internet meme like "pics or STFU" ...

Instead of promoting good manners, it's just a demonstration of lacking cultural/social skills. A bit like getting all fussy if you go to UK and someone wishes you luck by seemingly wishing you harm by saying "break a leg" :P

excellent point. this pretty much IS internet culture.

I have a friend in the "real world" that all we do is say STFU to each other and laugh, but the stuff you do on the internet you normally wouldn't do face to face. It's quite different.

Exactly. It's different in the sense that it's a particular cultural strand; a pretty exceptional one but still comparable to other such strands with their own idioms and figures of speech. That's what "pics or STFU" is, a figure of speech in a certain cultural context. A humorous one at that, conveying much richer and friendlier meaning than seriously saying "show some pics or STFU" at face value. Again, much like the initially very negative sounding "break a leg" when a British dude says it to you before you go, say, gigging/hiking/biking

I think the problem only occurs when someone values their own opinion a little too much... I personally wouldn't feel the need to tell anyone to STFU becasue I don't see the value in stopping someone from making a tit of themselves.

It's true people wouldn't say half the things face to face but posting online is the equivalent to standing in a shopping centre with a loudspeaker shouting at everyone in the place... Someone is bound to tell you where to get off at some point!!!

I've had a positive experience in my time here and long may it continue :D

Just do what I do. Talk about music theory. Guaranteed to kill even the most popular threads.

I follow a lot of software forums and other types. This is the only forum that I follow that seems to degenerate as the number of postings increase.

I generally don't reply to this type of issue, but I find a lot of what I see and read here offensive.

I'm not sure what the 'Internet Culture' is. I was on the internet back in the 1980's when there was UUCP and USENet. Gopher was starting to appear, but HTTP was a long ways away.

Back then, the signal to noise ratio was very high because only technical people knew how to use the stuff or had access.

Things started to degrade quickly when AOL allowed their users internet access.

The culture is evolving, and it appears to be going through a pretty rough and uncouth period right now, like the Wild West period.

It's certainly not a black and white issue, and each forum user here probably has their own take on where the line in the sand is.

On the subject of RTFM
Personally I won't cry foul if someone comes asking for "how do I press play?" or "abaleton records the midi?" and receives the answer RTFM. This is because I think the response is actually fitting for particularly dumb-assed and rude questions. In these cases the posters pretty much never read the manual or have even try to find a solution before asking someone to 'do it for them'. That's ignorant.

I think it's bad form respond "RTFM" if a user asks a question such as "how can I change tempo or signature in each scene" and has obviously made some attempt to figure it out already. Although that answer is pretty well stated in the manual, I can believe that it may be missed, so it's worth a brief response.

However if the question is stated "HOW the fuck can I CHANGE the tempo this is STUPID!1?", then it's RTFM responses and monkey pictures all the way from me. Anyone posting a badly stated, ill defined and outright insulting post deserves crazy responses from all and sundry.

On the subject of deviation from the topic
If a topic relates to a specific question, such as "where is the count-in control" then the question is usually answered on page one, so later devation into monkey pictures is irrelevant and shouldn't bother anyone.
Where a topic is about mac/PC , religion, whether Live has shit timekeeping/bad summing .. it's a topic that is going to stir a hornets nest . There is no way a poster can begin a topic like that and expect polite discourse, it wouldn;t happen at the Pope's house and it won't happen here.

On the subject of forum aliases
personally I find them uniformly tedious and unfunny. As I've said elsewhere, they remind me of Uncle Bill at the xmas party putting on 'comedy glasses' and making fart gags. My primary thought is 'sad, sad man'.
But then, I know a lot of people here find these aliases funny, so whatever floats your boat. I believe "Everyone Loves Raymond" is also popular.

For aliases I can't help but think: why not man up and do your lame humour in your own voice?
All my weak attempts are here for people to see, what, are you afraid of part of your own brain or something?

On the general subject of etiquette
In the main I think that people should behave person-to-person as they would if they met the respondents in real life. And also assuming that the entire encounter was being broadcast live to thousands of people, and archived for later.

IE: remain as polite as possible and try not to be a dick. Because otherwise, in 5 years time all that anyone will remember about you is that you called some random guy a nazi and you HATE trance.

personally, I am exactly this much of an opinionated dick in real life. As the few people on here who have met me in real life will tell you, I am in fact more opinionated and overbearing in real life.

I am also tl;dr in real life too.

I think from your pics you did look like someone who is easily offended in a geeky electronics kind of way.

Same here, actually :). I might intuitively avoid some idioms more suitable for forum context, but hey, otherwise it's 100% me, and I would say the same things using my vocal cords. Like archnaut, I've been dealing with the net since before the HTTP stuff happened, too.
