Ironically, since I bought Live I use it much more than I ever did when I was "evaluating" it, likely because the monetary investment actually increased my desire to use it. There are benefits for the user beyond simply supporting the company... like the stickers.

Re: who do you report cracked software to for ableton?
I started off using a cracked version. I'm not a DJ, so it was the only way that I would have actually invested the time in the program to justify a $500 purchase (now $1000 with the Live 7 Upgrade and the Live 8 Suite Upgrade). I'm not saying it was right, I'm just saying.

Just some cut from one of the pirate groups nfo
So I would not blame pirates at all. It is a personal decision every one is taking and no one has a right to judje one another.
SPiRiT provides these sound discs as a means for those of us ?
? who can not afford to spend money on samples discs that ?
? could possibly be of no use to us: This is your chance to ?
? evaluate the product. ?
? ?
? If you find these samples useful and you use them ?
? !BUY THE PRODUCT! ?
? ?
? The people who make these sounds would not be able to ?
? continue creating them without the financial support of the ?
? people who who use them! Do the right thing, honour their ?
? work!

Ok - seems to be confession time round here! -
+1 here for getting started with a live crack and paying up later. I got hooked with live 5, used the crack for about 9 months till I realised I had little need for most of my previous tools - acid, cubase, cool edit.
I've been paying for it ever since. I personally couldn't have made the switch based on a restrictive demo or by reading a review in a magazine. Once I realised the depth and potential of the software - which took some time, I was more than happy to shell out.
I'm just finishing off a music production degree and see the majority of my classmates using cracks in this way too. Most will try things for some time - drop the dead wood that's cluttering up their systems after some time, and then eventually cough up for the software they're using every day.

Re: who do you report cracked software to for ableton?
There is no need to run cracked versions of Live for evaluation purposes, given that you have a fully functional 14 day demo trial period, with nothing disabled., so that excuse is pretty lame at this time. Even all the Suite instruments and Operator/Sampler etc are functional. I can understand more 'trying before buying' with a product that does not have a demo such as Cubase, but it's no longer a valid excuse for Live.
Where are my stats ?? IN the same place as YOUR stats Dredd !! I know from other music sites and from having seen the forums on pirate bay and other warez sites out of interest in this topic (no I have never downloaded any illegal files, of software or kung fu movies) that most of those people are chasing new versions of cracked software with no intention of ever paying. How is the junkie analogy bad - to me it's a fair analogy - a lot of people who run cracks will run them forever and not pay, just as a junkie won't pay for a hit if they can get it for free - just as they will continue to bit torrent the latest mp3 music files rather than buy through Itunes, just because they can. People (esp. many kids) have money to spend on PS3s and $300 dollar running shoes yet they feel totally entitled to run cracked software and laugh at 'mugs' who pay for it.
There are so many people validating piracy on this board, that it's untrue. If this continues, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ableton do what Steinberg did to the Cubase forum, and require only registered users, who input their serial codes, to be allowed to participate in the forum.
Whatever though. It's a personal choice, but it gets on my nerves when people come on here wanting free tech support for their warezed version, or boasting about the use of cracked software (with a view to 'you're a mug for paying') - at cubase.net, they would be gone in a second.

I dunno, it took me several months to get "into" live. 14 days wouldnt have sold me on live. It took me at least a year or two of running the crack and really getting to know and understand everything in it before I was willing to pony up the $500 for the legit version, which I'm proud to say I have now. Still, the truth is (and i'm not saying whether its right or wrong) I never would have considered purchasing Live if it weren't for me abusing the cracked version for a while.

+1 i just did it with the non save version instead of a cracked one...
Re: who do you report cracked software to for ableton?
Same here, though I got the license with v4, all the following, and now running full Suite 8.Willyum wrote: A large portion of the members on this board, including myself have used cracked versions of Live and because of the exposure are now dedicated, loyal Ableton customers. I personally have licenses for 5 versions and ALL suite devices and libraries..... because of a crack!
I had a Traction license, but when Live came with midi I just had to check it out with the ability to save. Was staying up in the mountains in India a few months, and electricity went on a daily basis. Sometimes for weeks. So I took the bus down to Delhi, just a 22 hour ride, and went on the plane to London, and from London to Oslo where all my buddies live. Went over to a friend who had Live license installed on a desktop with a nice 17" CRT monitor. I was lucky to borrow it, as we agreed on the mail I sent to him from Delhi. Then it was simply to take the first flight back to India again, and carrying the setup by foot only 7 kilometers into the forest where we lived, up in the north of Almora, close o Nepal... or.... well, I bought live within the same year, after borrowing it for a lil bit!
Now you can get 14 days of use with saving ability, if im not mistaken? If so, its much easier and gets a more possitive feeling towards making friends try it! I find it hard to make friends change sequencers sometimes. But Live is so much better to cowork with, so I try to make them getting into it if I work with them or want to work with them!

14 days aint shit to evaluate a product.
junkies ALWAYS PAY.
i think most here are legit users.
i dont give a fuck if they're not.
if they've no intention of buying doesnt that kinda presuppose they wouldnt even if there were no cracks around? no? to me those guys are like modern day stamp collectors; anal, obsessive, and always hankering after the holy grail of stamps. then there are us. this is called balance. and nothings gonna ever change that, especially a moaning, live using, bitch ass hypocrite. i am not gonna argue any more with you leeds boy. i already did this on the sonar forums and put too many backs up. its better here, but just as puritanical in places, and i dont dig that.
thats my stance and leedsboy u aint gonna change it I'm afraid.

Re: who do you report cracked software to for ableton?
the truth is i am a working musician who uses live for my whole process when electronic music and live shows are involved. I have been using it since version 4/5 and only bought at version 7 and only because I make money from it. From that i bought a real copy of live then upgraded...and will continue to do so while the product remains the best if i didnt use copies that might have been a little bit less than legitimate i wouldn't be here still using/paying for it.
I don't mind knowing that there are people out there using this software for free that i have payed a lot of money for, they are not in the market for it at that price anyway so they are not affecting sales at all. If they could afford to buy it they would...and i would rather have the music and experiences they produce than call them out on the fact that their budget doesn't cover an reasonable expensive daw.
Rolex where a company that understood this, they are not catering for people who would buy fake rolex's, it was just not their clientele so their business isnt scratched by it...people who want a rolex buy a rolex (i wouldnt they suck but you get the idea)
Any piracy protection only hurts genuine buyers in the end .... the crackers will just get rid of it sometimes before release haha

Re: who do you report cracked software to for ableton?
I use a pirated copy of Ableton. but right now, music is just a hobby. other then my roommates, no one has ever heard anything I've created or done with Ableton. I don't have the time right now with school/work to spend more then an hour or two a week playing with Ableton. One day though, I do plan on putting lots of time into it, and plan on creating stuff that I actually want people to hear, and I will for sure pay for a legit copy because Ableton does deserve the money. but I can't justify paying for something I use one or two hours a week.. I recommend Ableton to all of my friends who are wanting to learn to produce and I've actually gotten 3 people to buy it. Ableton > All.
don't bother flaming because I don't care what you think. just sharing my story...

Hahaha that's just to assure that the tone is playful i'm not being hostile even if my language is provocative, it's just not my nature. I get so frustrated when people bring this up its so ridiculous even more so that he admitted to doing it himself anyway. Its that tattle tale behavior that distinguished that idiot child that everyone in school hated, its pointing out the blatantly obvious or trying to police things just because you can afford to do the right thing.....its douchbaggery hahasacredgeometry wrote:

Re: who do you report cracked software to for ableton?
This forum is becoming like a old boys warez club - and the amount of denial/excuses just gets more and more amusing with every addition ....
I can't justify paying for my crack cocaine for a few minutes a day.
I can't justify paying for smack.
So I steal. But it's only a few muggings a week, and only to strangers, so it's OK.
I only watch a few hours of TV per week, so it's not worth buying my own satellite dish, so I just hack into the neighbours. It's OK, no one gets hurt.
I steal oranges because if I didn't they might not get sold, or someone might knock them over accidentally and then they go into a skip/dumpster, so it's only POTENTIAL earnings, not REAL earnings to the greengrocer, therefore I can just take the odd one because it might have gone bad and had to be thrown out otherwise. BTW, it was juicy sweet and delicious, I must steal more of these in case more of them go bad in future .....
I siphoned gas off the neighbour, you never know, I might have saved his life, in the event of a crash, the more flammable liquid there is, the more chance of his car going up in flames - by siphoning off a few gallons today, I might have saved a life ....
Do you think Ableton should reward you with a free copy, given your noble action of assisting them to sell 3 copies ??
People running cracks deserve to be put in the stocks and have rotten vegetables and insults hurled at them. All this denial and these lame attempts to justify cracks/piracy - it is really laughable. Seriously, gave me the best laugh I had all weekend. Use Acid XMC or Reaper if you can't afford to buy the product. Seriously.
