HELP! Live 8 - One of my songs won't open - Live crashes

Post by 2neffoo » Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:34 am

Purchased live 8, worked on a few songs, saved them, one of them will not re-open. It causes Live to eventually crash.

Can someone from Ableton please help? I will lose heaps of work if I cant open this song.

Yep 48mb.

I think I know whats wrong, my hard drives are nearly full (Its a laptop, a good laptop, but a couple of years old so small hard drive). I'm going to buy a new drive. I will have to install it next week, I will revive this thread if there is still a problem.

Thanks very much for getting back to me so quickly.

Hi Christian, is there some way I can upload this file to you? Its definately the pure .als file and its 48mb. And it definately needs your attention... it will open but crashes in various ways as soon as I start working.

Thanks.

Hi 2neffoo,

I figured I would be more active on the forum even though I posted a question and didn’t receive 1 response from the forum. In any event, I recently had the same problem with one of my projects. I reached out to Ableton and they did reply but I winded up fixing the problem on my own. I hope you have the same luck because I know how it feels to “loose” a project that of course you think is great.

To make this short…it turned out that NI Massive was crashing Live and no project with Massive in it would open. I tried a few work around ideas but nothing worked. My version was a Torrent copy so I reached out to the guy who hooked me up. He researched forums and found a solution.

I first updated Massive to the newest OS. Then I moved the file "NIMassiveDataBase_mi" from my UserName/Library/ApplicationSupport/Native Instruments/Massive folder onto my desktop. I opened Massive in stand alone mode and this allowed Massive to re-build the library. When I opened up the project that was crashing everything worked and I had a big smile on my face (I've not had any problems since). Once I was satisfied it was working properly I trashed the file off my desktop.

With that, see if you can diagnose the problem by identifying one of your plug-ins as the issue (if they aren’t licensed versions). By the way, I don’t know if this process will work with any other plug-in or for your version of Massive for that matter. I’m simply relaying what worked for me for a similar issue. Hope this helps.

By the way, Live has been nothing but rock steady for me since day 1.

Hi PTB, thanks very much for your reply. The song has a licensed version of Kontakt loaded at the moment however it could still be the cause of the problem because its version 3 - not the latest update. I purchased Komplete 5 and a few of the other NI vsts which come with it have caused problems for me on another computer in Logic. To fix that I had to remove the vst file from my vsts folder, then open Logic, remove the vst from the channel in Logic, save the song, and wait for the next version of the vst/s in question to be released! Luckily I had other things to do and didnt have to wait too long becuase NI has released updates for all the vsts I was using in Logic and now everything seems to be stable.
Anyway, regarding Ableton, I have many songs with NI vsts loaded which are working fine so I suspect its something else. Its actually a laptop i'm using for Ableton and it only had an 80gb hard drive which was close to full and became very full when I installed Live 8. So I worked on a few songs after the install and everything seemed fine until I did a really long session on one particular song and thats the song which is now unhappy. It's size bloated to 48mb when I saved it, so my only theory is that the bloating is a form of corruption caused by Ableton not having enough drive space to work with. Didn't happen in 7.0.14 because that was more stable I guess. I have now replaced the hard drive with a 250gb drive and things are looking slightly better on that song, its still crashing and still bloated in size but its lasting longer and longer each time before it crashes. So fingers crossed I can revive it in some way. Haven't had a lot of spare time to test it yet.

So there you go, a lot of info you may or may not need but I'm also hoping Christian from Ableton will read it and help me out.

BTW I have also always found Ableton to be very reliable. I've been really pushing 7.0.14 as hard as I can and I've seen it recover from some huge (but rare) crashes. I always wait that extra couple of minutes with Ableton.
