Re: Announcing Mod271!
Just had a play with it. It runs "ok" on the first gen iPod when I just playback the patches. I occasionally get buffer underruns if I:rarelyseen wrote:Yay! Thanks! I'll wait and report back asap.
Ok I've switched it to allow 1st gen iPhones and iPods, it takes forever for anything to update in iTunes so just wait for it to show up. Please let me know how it runs on the 1st gen hardware, if the performance is terrible people will start complaining and I'll have to change it back but it's worth a shot...
- play notes on the virtual keyboard in quick succession
- tap and slide left/right on a keyboard key too often
- edit node parameters on DSP intensive modules
- zoom on the main page (though not always)
Looks like the touch / multitouch functions are causing the overloads. I checked the system profiler and noticed that it consumes quite a lot of resources when I just put a finger anywhere on the GUI. It gets much worse if I put 2 fingers simultaneously on it.
I also noticed that if I open the virtual keyboard and enable the opaque mode, it performs a lot better. I'd assume that if there was a global opaque mode, the app would be quite usable on 1st gen iPhones/iPods, although multitouch functions may still cause dropouts.
Apart from that it's a great application!! Perhaps the best synth I have seen so far on the iPhone platform. Congrats!

You are definitely right about the touchscreen taking loads of resources. This in completely in Apples hands. There are many posts online about the ridiculous amounts of CPU time the touchscreen consumes. Also it gets exponentially worse with more than one finger on the screen.rarelyseen wrote:Just had a play with it. It runs "ok" on the first gen iPod when I just playback the patches. This is kinda why I added the rendering filters so you can can pick and choose what is drawn which helps because the touchscreen seems to stall rendering. Hopefully in the next rev I'll get a chance to optimize the rendering and DSP even more.

I think windows mobile is more resourceful when it comes to touch screen software. Have you had a chance to look at the windows mobile developers kit on xda developers yet? I actually think that it will be the better platform all round.
Re: Announcing Mod271!
Windows Mobile sucks. nobody likes designing on that platform.
Android looks promising, Ubuntu is already pretty widely used in mobile devices and lots of companies are coming out with linux based OSes for mobile.

I disagree, it's fast becoming the biggest selling phone os and the amount of apps for it are escalating tremendously. Also, it's far more versatile than the iphone so makes an ideal platform for music software.Tone Deft wrote:Windows Mobile sucks. nobody likes designing on that platform.
Also, Hemicube has already noted that it may be quite easy to port his application over to windows mobile. I for one will buy it when he does. It looks like it could be a lot of fun.

I disagree. I was just at this http://esc-sv09.techinsightsevents.com/ (San Jose), Microsoft unveiled their new mobile platform at the keynote and most people just walked out, it was pretty funny. there was little to no interest in it. who am I to judge, these are just the people in the industry designing these things. like I wrote, there was a lot of Ubuntu and spinoffs of it. I just got off the phone with Mentor Graphics talking about their Nucleus OS, they have a very cool UI development kit.Jarvisimon wrote:I disagree, it's fast becoming the biggest selling phone os and the amount of apps for it are escalating tremendously. Microsoft is the most scoffed at attendee at this conference.

Without being there I can't really make a comment, however, here's an article for you to take a look at. http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/what ... he-past-s/Tone Deft wrote:I was just at this http://esc-sv09.techinsightsevents.com/ (San Jose), Microsoft unveiled their new mobile platform at the keynote and most people just walked out, it was pretty funny. there was little to no interest in it.
It should be noted that sales have gone up hugely since the article was written.
How do you know these people didn't walk out to go to the toilet?
I think you'll find the main phone manufacturers are very interested and are far from scoffing at the massive profits to be made.
Re: Announcing Mod271!
that article is over a year old. FAIL.
the toilet? that's a really weak reply. people were there to see the previous speaker, Ken Mattingly,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Mattingly
the guy that was bumped off the Apollo 13 mission, amazing speaker. then Microsoft took the stage and the place emptied (a few hundred people walked out.) I stayed because I didn't want to be rude. their presentation was pretty bad, not much new to offer, just polishing old turds.
you must work for Microsoft, other than that I don't know where you get your impressions of the industry.

Re: Announcing Mod271!
Here's a much more recent article, it does however show windows not to have the share of the market i thought it had but it's still a bigger slice than apple.Tone Deft wrote:you must work for Microsoft, other than that I don't know where you get your impressions of the industry.

Re: Announcing Mod271!
I asked how you get your impressions of the industry and you have no answer? I have no reason to believe you're anything more than a fanboy, that's not an insult, so what if you're a big fan of a product?!?!?
that article is strictly an Apple vs. Windows comparison, Ubuntu, Android and others aren't included in that study. OK, Android isn't prolific but could have a bright future.
still not buying it. I have no interest in changing your mind, I just wanted to drop my $0.02.

I'm not anyone's fanboy for any product, it's just that I have a windows mobile phone and would therefore like to see Hemicube's synth app ported over to it.
You're trying to tell me that nobody's interested in it, yet I have given you some evidence to show there's more a bigger interest than the iphone. Perhaps the reason ubuntu isn't on the pie chart is because its sales figures aren't in the league. It certainly shows all the other main players including android, so why you think it's just an apple vs windows study I don't know.
The chart (real world sales figures) is likely very accurate and therefore a far better gauge than a 3rd party opinion.

Re: Announcing Mod271!
I've been developing Windows Mobile apps for several years and my advice is stay the hell away. It's a horrendous mess, especially when you consider the diverse range of hardware you will be expected to support. On my desk as I type I have at least a dozen MS mobile devices laying around and there is no way in hell I would swap my iPhone for any one of them.
