eh, as i'm the one who started this thread 6 (!) years ago (how the hell did it come to life suddenly ?) i might have some bad news for the pc-users on this forum. because last year i switched back from pc to mac.
in the meantime i really, really, really tried to like my pc laptops. maybe i've just been (very) unlucky but in 6 years time i bought a sony vaio, then a much faster acer, then a much faster asus laptop. and none of them managed to behave and stay cool (ahum) during a hot and sweaty clubnight with lots of bass frequencies. every one of them crashed way too often while i was on stage. and nothing is worse than playing for a big crowd on a festival like Dance Valley and have your computer crash in the middle of your set, which is what happened last year. that's really embarrassing!
there was one gig where a dj had to help us out (by putting on a record) three times in one hour...

so i gave up, bought a MacBook Pro and since then i haven't had any problems.

it's true, pc s are cheaper etc, but in a real LIVE situation Mac definitely is more reliable... :D

cheers

you were probably just unlucky.

theres millions of pc field laptops used in sciences and outside applications more demanding than nightclub use.

oh, and welcome back!

I'd have to disagree, I've gigged a lot in hot/humid/sweaty places in Virgina with the Toshibas and no problems. I've seen plenty of "performances" by mac using djs where they've had crashes on stage. There are too many variables to disregard pcs or macs in general--both systems benefit from proper OS tweaking, as well as ample disc space and the use of an external drive. Various vst plug-ins and dodgy software can hamper Ableton's performance or cause crashes on stage. Most importantly, I feel the soundcard is a critical part of the equation--my RME has worked perfectly for 5+ years now, while some of the mac dudes I've helped have had issues related more to the soundcard or the crappy mac soundcard drivers (no fault of Apple)--for instance the notorius M-Audio FW410, as well as others.

Bottom line--blanket statements about mac or pc laptops are bs, there are a lot of variables, and without a doubt a good pc laptop, properly setup with a good soundcard, can perform flawlessly on stage, as can a mac. With a crappy setup (non-tweaked OS, jam-packed C: drive and no external drive, crappy soundcard/driver), either system can fail. I've seen an employer and co-worker send the G4 and now MacBook Pro laptops into Apple three times each to get fixed over the last 5 years, while both of my toshibas have been flawless--real world proof to me at least that the hype surrounding the supposed "perfection" of macs is just that, hype. Sure, for someone that doesn't know much about computers and doesn't have a budget, by all means I'd suggest a mac for the best chance of things working without any tweaks. But with a good soundcard and 1 hour of OS tweaking and striping off the manufacteres crappy software, pc laptops can be rock solid. Not trying to flame, just sharing my experiences with both platforms, and again, many issues on either OS are related to peripherals or user ignorance.

thanks, adventurepants. :D
and it's true, i might have been unlucky.

and quandry, i suppose you're absolutely right too

(since i bought an rme some problems disappeared)

still i wouldn't want to be responsible for people switching from mac to pc...

but it was definitely not my intention to start another mac-pc war

music is music

very strange by the way, reading a six year old thread..from the time ableton live was still at # 2.0
