it's a homemade potentiometer, just like on a guitar or synth. the black strip's resistance varies depending on where he moves his finger, the metal strip would connect to the input of his controller board.

it's a cool idea, been posted before.

in a few weeks I will be forced to renew my DL and get all big-brotherized with a magnetic srip, I suppose
