There was a plugin called Vitamin C that performed this function in Live 7.
It allowed the mouse to zoom in and out with the scroll wheel.
Midi mapping the zoom sounds possible, assuming it is accessible through the midi map mode. Midi-yoke can translate midi CC's to keyboard shortcuts if there's a way to control zoom via keyboard.
