Operator...
{/sarcasm}!!!!!!!!!
I am very amused by the sarcasm tags.
I apologize for the logorrhea in advance...
As far as the Kraftwerk speculations are concerned- I would not rule out a connection between "Operator" and Kraftwerk. Their significance in electronic music is still profound.
Rather than criticizing them for how they haven't changed, I find it more important to address why they haven't changed, and to marvel at whatever few ways they have decided to incorporate modern electronica elements into their own mix. After all, so much of what is out there has been influenced by their early, pioneering efforts.
While at first listen they may sound minimalist and dated, I feel their is a certain magnitudinal force associated with each of their beats- one that can be associated with a stark contrast between their "order" and evolving techno-tantrums over the years. Mind you, I am not a purist, but the continuity of their vision, despite the evolution of electronic-music/technology (I believe) does more to support the spirit of electronic music than the Big-Bang of Aphex-Twin Coming for Daddy.
I hold Abelton in about as high regards as I hold Kraftwerk (for their vision) and I would not for a second be surprised if David's guess was correct. Nor have I consumed enough paint thinner to be certain of it.
