ARE THE FIREWIRE INTERFACES ARE THE SOURCE OF THE AUDIO DROPOUTS??
CHECK YOUR OSX SYSTEM LOGS.
IF YOU HAVE CLIP ERRORS RELATING TO BUFFERS RUNNING ONE AHEAD ETC, THEN IT IS 99% TO BE THE SOURCE OF YOUR PROBLEM.
SOLVING IT MAY BE A DIFFERENT ISSUE, MAYBE GOING TO USB IS THE ANSWER FOR THE TIME BEING?
MUTU AND M-AUDIO IN PARTICULAR ARE CAUSING DIFFICULTY.....

Vince I don't think this can be the case. I used to have an 828 and that ran with no problems at all. I now have a 410 and apart from the early driver releases which were buggy I had no problem with it up until Live 4.04. I do seem to be suffering the occasional drop out now even when CPU activity is fairly low. I think I'm right in saying that most of the audio dropout problems I've seen here are related to Mac OSX/M-Audio Firewire/Live 4.04 users and my own experience corroborates the view that it's an M-Audio Mac driver/Live 4.04. The fact that their latest driver release is so obviously pants bears testament to this also.

yeah....i seem to be getting a lot of pm's regarding the fact its only m-audio firewire...and yes the nes driver is crap because its not 10.3.7 compatable...
why they released it now is anyones guess....

It actually says on the download page that it has not been tested for 10.3.7 as yet.....but I've tested it on 10.3.3 and it's an absolute joke. They say that they have tested it with 10.3.6.....it would be interesting to hear from someone on 10.3.6 as to what the results are on their system.

These dropouts are just too random,
it happens about once or twice every hour.
If I wasn't using live4 on stage or use it to actually perform,
no, I might have not able to notice this problem.
If the clips were playing for around 20 minutes only,
again, i might not have heard the dropouts.
It needs to be played around an hour for the problem.
BTW the apple genius bar guy told me to stay away from the 10.3.7,
i heard only bad things in japan, everyone is regreting about updating to it.

but my left fan was out of hand.
Glad that apple noticed the noise and said it needs to be repaired.
I knew my powerbook wouldn't make such a noise.

So would I.....it seems faintly ridiculous that Ableton should have got into bed with a hardware manufacturer whose hardware (certainly for mac users) seems increasingly culpable. I think M-Audio were quick to see the impending explosion in Live users....viz the Oxygen 8, Firewire 410 and very handy giging bag, all of which I own and all designed with portability and playing Live live in mind. I don't know who approached who in setting up the distribution deal but I genuinely feel with the way this combo gets touted in all the advertising it is in both their interests to operate in a more hand in glove fashion. That M-Audio should release a driver, on the eve of a Live update that is so obviously woeful is quite frankly dumb. At the time that the 410 came out there really was nothing equivalent available in the price range. If they could just get their driver act together it could yet return to being a pretty sweet combo. So come on guys this is the left hand.....let's see if it can talk to the right

some of the guys are saying that the beta 0.5 live is still dropping out.....
Sniffio, are you saying that your fan was faulty as well as the os causing a massive temp hike??

But if you can hear your fan from 15 feet away,
i recommened to get it fixed.
Unbelievable to actually hear the regular spinning fan with other PBs.
Amazingly quiet, can barely hear it.
Just the way I remenbered in 2004.
My fix is going to be
+logic board
+fan
+thermal module
+internal middle speaker
the total cost rose to about $1,500 which my warrety is going to cover.
but you might want to consider of getting that apple care in the future.
I can't afford $1500 every half a year in the next 3 years.

But you're on macs, so you better keep your eyes and ears open for
stability.

I had huge problems with 10.36...but there was no easy way to go back to 10.35... 10.37 solved the 10.36 unstabilitys but makes Live even 2% slower (regarding the benchmark live set that was posted here on the list. 10.36 is no option.
10.33 was very stable...but much slower in the graphics than 10.35.
10.33 has 5% less cpu usage on the mentioned benchmark set.

i am finding the 17" PB a dream to work with...very quick.....compared to the speed of my g5 in the office, id say its about 80-90% as quick...maybe coz ive got nothing in it apart from ableton and peak.
the m-audio drivers situation is beyond comprehension....why such a big company has and is failing to recognise this apple firewire incompatabilaty is totally unnacceptable.
Im still testing the audiophile with the older 1.2.4 driver and no reverbs....

But I'm sure many of the musicians are sticking to the same gears,
same computers, and the same os.
My favorite musician still does his gigs with his 2-3 year old powerbook.
And I think that's cool and neat.
I think I won't be updating anything,
untill I realise that I really need it.

Yes, vince.
If you optimize your powerbook G4 in a right way for DAW,
it can go alot faster than the regular G5s.
I never had any trouble with the speed with my powerbooks, too.
Although another chip with 1.5ghz would be handy.
When the new PB like 1.5ghz dual, or PBG5 comes out,
watch out for the very first model for it.
I would stay away from it untill I know for sure that it's safe.
Even the latest, history-long, PBG4s has these problems.
I was warned to check out magazines and forums before buying a new one.

my source at apple in coupertino tells me that me should expect the Powerbook G5 NOT in the Q2 of 2005 as is being stated on some pages, but in August or September of this year.
The opening model will be a single processor G5 1.8gz.
also, and in fear of being sued by apple for this one, watch out for some interesting news on the chassis......its not carbon fibre as some suggest...
and its not as thin as the g4....
