Live 8 Vocoder?

Post by ironwill2000 » Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:39 am

I did a search but could not find anything specifically on the vocoder in Live 8.

How does it compare with others like Vokator or an actual vocoder say from Korg.

The Vocoder would pretty much be the only reason I would upgrade to 8.

Thanks in advance, sorry if this has already been covered.

So far I have gotten exceptionally better results with Live's vocoder than any vocoder I've used before, but I have limited experience with other vocoders. The best way for you to know is to try the demo.

I can't comment on it soundwise, but it is certainly easy to use, which means that I actually use it more, for better or for worse. Routing warped wrestling promos through the vocoder has given me far too much amusement.

+1 on try the demo
  1. Search for "poodleface" on YouTube.
  2. See Ric Flair rap.
  3. ROFL

it doesnt have any of the cool gizmo sound fx that vokator has but its certainly easier to use and sounds amazing.

I find its sound and usability to rate about a 9, and its processor usage to rate about a 2. I know it's a complex effect and that this is to be expected, but you're going to want as beastly a computer as possible, especially to run it in more than one channel at once...the live 8 demo just about shits out entirely running two or three instances on my C2D macbook. V.8 overall is a wicked chokey processor hog so far, but I imagine it won't take too many updates to get it sped up. Even as it is, it's usable, kinda.

I thought I would use vocoder a lot, and maybe I will at some point, but ATM I'm way more excited about having a clean, aggressive brickwall limiter, a simple little overdrive that sounds tasty, *****Corpus***** and Collision, little treats like the right-click multi-mode stuff on the delays, and general interface/workflow tweaks.

Just the fact that they fixed the window focus behavior where you'd have the focus on something else like your browser window, and then have to click once to regain focus on Live, then again to make something happen, like hitting the stop button or a scene play button or whatever. Megathankyous to the programmer who fixed this. You made my month.

And that's probably about enough paragraphs' worth of OT ranting.

It's definitely the best bundled Vocoder with a DAW I've used, but I haven't gone into too much depth with it.

I've found Live 8 to be pretty light on the CPU so far.

i dig it. I've refrained from using Live 8 until 8.0.2 comes along (this first release is too buggy for me), but from my experience with it during beta testing, i was pleasantly surprised with the Vocoder.

I should elaborate about the processor issue...it's not that there is a lot of hiccupping, or that the meter goes off the chart, just that even though it's sitting there at 48%, the interface gets all choppy, like the meters 'n such don't move smoothly. Dramatically different than 7 on my machine. It also seems to get progressively worse after live has been open for a while. And Vocoder is a major exacerbator. But quite excellent nonetheless.
