EMU 0404 USB

Post by jallan99 » Tue Apr 21, 2009 9:52 pm

Hi,

is anyone using an EMU 0404 USB soundcard successfully with Ableton? I bought one because I needed a midi input and I hoped it would provide better audio than the soundcard built into the motherboard of my PC. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to work propoerly with Ableton. At what I thought seems like a reasonable buffer size (however many sameples equate to 10ms), I can get about 5 seconds of clean sounding music out, followed by some awful crackling, then silence. To get a clean sound for a reasonable lenght of time, I need to set the buffer so large ( 1000 ms) that when I play one of the software instruments, whatever I play comes out about half a bar after I play the notes. I have tried the MME/Direct X driver, EMUs ASIO drivers, and ASIO-4-ALL for all. I have noticed that Ableton's software synths bring on the problem much more quickly than using audio clips. I am working on a new, fast Quad Core desktop PC running VISTA with lots of memory and lots of hard drive space. I have swtiched on the multi-core support in Ableton. I have checked EMU's site for the latest drivers. And I have read through the message board - where I noticed someone else having a similar problem with EMU0202 and a Mac - nothing in that thread helped me with my problem.

I just started using Ableton at version 7. The help desk gave me some suggestions for addressing the problem. None of them worked - they mainly related to admin rights and the way Vista deals with graphics. I had given up on getting audio out through the EMU as I found that I could use the motherboard's built-in soundcard for audio output and get the midi input throught the EMU - with no crackles and with negligible latency. But, when Live 8 came along I started to wonder whether the new software would sort out the problem. Unfortunately it didnt. It just reminded me that I could have bought a USB midi input for about one fifth of the price I paid for the EMU0404.

Has anyone else had trouble with the EMU0404 or better still found out how to get it to work properly?

Thanks
