Why can't we bitch? Old folks get their senior discounts, why can't we?

I would love to own Live8, but the fact is I can't afford it as a student.

but they shouldn't.

I used to have a traveling retail business and old folks would always ask "is that with the senior discount" it always kinda pissed me off like "oh sure, since you're old I don't get to make a living" I would usually just responde with "it's discounted for everyone"

because the fact of the matter is you're entitled to nothing.

"I'll take 2 cheeseburgers and a coke. WHAT??! NO FREE APPLE PIE??!! WHY DON'T I GET A FREE APPLE PIE??!!"

"you should write them an email"

"Dear mcdonalds, I'm a student and can't afford things, you should give me a free apple pie with my meal."

"Dear concerned customer, No."

Exactly. And like I say, I'm a student also. If you can't afford something, boo-fucking-hoo. There's loads I would love to buy, but I can't. I can't go out as much as I'd like to as I can't afford it. But do you see me walking round asking everybody selling something, or offering a service if I can have special treatment as I chose to go down this route? No?

There's people who are unemployed, trying thier best to look for jobs. Do you really think you are entitled to get things for less than those people?

Next you'll be telling me the government will be taxing the rich 50%...oh wait a minute

Here's the deal with the upgrade, as I understand it:

The live 8 EDU upgrade price is the same price as the full version upgrade price, but the EDU version has always been priced lower than the full version, so, in essence, you are still paying less overall as a student than a non-student, even if the dollar amount for the EDU upgrade is the same as the dollar amount full version upgrade.

For example:
(the price I'm stating for Live 7 is just an example, I don't know what the EDU version of 7 really cost)

Live 7 EDU + Live 8 upgrade:
300 + 189 = $489

Live 7 Full + Live 8 upgrade:
500 + 189 = $689

So, technically, you're still paying less than full (non-EDU) users.

Personally, I also wish that the EDU upgrade price was lower, but when you consider the amount of tech support that has happen every time a new version goes out, and then you consider that with Live you get free tech support (try getting that from cubase or doh'tools), the current price is understandable...although Ableton hasn't really done much to explain it (sorry, but not everyone has the level of immediate analysis that Germans do  ).

Also, with the volume of customer service going on right now, on top of the overall bugginess of the first version of any software, it's better just to wait. Live's EDU upgrade price was below $80 for the last half to third of last year - customer service isn't busy as hell, and the software is actually reliable by that point.

Summary: Just wait.

haha some people really take this education discount to heart. I mean, really the mentality you guys take is that if something is selling for a certain price you should just accept it. Really? are you that broken in by capitalism, do you really think that oil is worth what it is, or that its ethical for grocery stores to raise prices during recessions? If you don't at least speak up for something like this you'll never be heard, so whats the harm? I'd think most ableton users would want everyone to be on the same page, if we all had 8 the forums would be a little more efficient and the focus would be on one version. Why so much hate for people wanting more for less? I mean why would you pay more if you could pay less or get something for free? It never hurts to ask, maybe not constantly bitch, but at least ask once.

I completely disagree. As a paying customer you are entitled to customer support and the ability to voice your opinions and concerns with a product. By your logic, there should be no beta testing, or forums that support user requests, we should just settle for what they give us, and pay whatever they ask. Ableton isn't the apple pie to a macdonalds meal, its the whole fucking restaurant. Ableton is a way of life, a community effort and a culture. It isn't just some product anymore, its evolved far beyond that and in the future I will be able to lay down the big bucks for all of their products as a loyal customer; thats what edu discounts are all about, building customer loyalty. Respectfully, to all you old farts with big boy jobs who can afford ableton right now, were just jealous, let us at least have our voice, freedom of speech maybe the only weapon students actually have.

DaddyHam is right on the money. It's hardly like anyone was kicking their toys out of the pram over this and I don't see how what anyone has said has given students a bad name by expecting discounts on everything. More to the point my main problems were with Live's pricing as a whole rather than the educational discount section. Given the rate at which live produces new versions, the upgrade prices are pretty ridiculous it has to be said, which makes it even harsher that they're no longer offering educational upgrades. I sent them an email and they've offered me a €30 euro off coupon which is always good. This is what they had to say about the pricing:
We have made every effort to ensure that Live 8 is a feature-packed release with a wealth of new techniques, effects and work-flow improvements.

Obviously, the prices are related to the work involved in such a big release and this time the price is a bit higher.

As you can see, as of Live 8 we can longer offer educational upgrades.

This was a tough decision for us but we've tried to accommodate all groups of users, not only educational customers, and still provide a living for our own employees. We feel that the current pricing is pretty fair compared to other companies in our industry.
