EDIT: If I keep live 8 window small on the 24" monitor, it works fine.. but if I maximize or use full screen on the 24" monitor, the gui starts to crawl on it's knees. :( can anyone duplicate this?
I use Live with an external 22" monitor (1680 x 1050) and can't duplicate your problems.

But I have a unibody MBP using the GeForce 9600M GT graphics card and since you have a Macbook, I take it you have a different graphics card. What card do you have? What graphics card do other people experiencing this problem use? Maybe that's the culprit.

Seems that other people are having issues with their macs. Check http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=111878.

My display card is that rubbish Intel (gma3000?) or something, but Live should not require a better display card to display it's non-existent graphics :) Maybe your GeForce 9600 compensates for the broken code..

If you by that mean that its sheer processing power would compensate for the slow performance you experience, I doubt it. But there's a risk that L8 uses a feature or two of the graphics card's feature set that L7 doesn't, and that this feature misbehaves with some graphics card models or graphics drivers.

Since L8 is just released, it's likely that the problem lies in its code. But if you haven't already, do make sure you have all the latest OS X updates installed, as well as the latest SMC and EFI firmware updates. You may have to locate and download the latter two yourself, from http://www.apple.com/support (search for EFI and SMC respectively). I've noticed that SMC and EFI updates aren't always included when you search for updates via the apple menu.

Apple rarely tell us exactly what their updates update... But there's a good chance that some updates addresses graphics issues. Such issues are unfortunately not uncommon.
