Extra instances of Live 8.01
Extra instances of Live 8.01
When trying to open Live I often get an error message about rewire and online sharing being unavailable due to multiple instances of Live. This happens whenever I have had to close live completely and then reopen it later. In the task manager I see multiple instances. The computer is a fresh install. Anybody else experiencing this?
Thanks.

Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
in the past live had problems releasing controllers after a crash / force quit.
try unplugging or power cycling any midi controllers, audio interfaces, etc. after the quit.

Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
It's not a crash, just a regular old "close"...
Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
ok
try turning off your controllers and see if the process ends

Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
I have the exact same problem. But to be honest I had it with Live 7 as well. Even a regular, non-eventful exit of Live leaves an instance running in task manager. I tried turning off my midi controllers after exiting and that was to no effect. Any other suggestions?
Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
what soundcard?
i have to restart my card (old aardvark) often when Live has problems. eventually I made a little .bat file which sits on my desktop. it stops the audio service (my card drivers run as a service) and then restarts. having a little icon for this process is really handy

Yep, I notice this problem yesterday as well. I tried to end process using control+alt+del but it was having non of it. Happened a few times and it sits there eating up your memory.
Definately needs sorting.

I'm using the E-MU 0404 PCI. I will try quiting E-MU PatchMix DSP and see if Live closes as well, but somehow I doubt it. I'm talking about when I quit Live without incident. Crashes are obviously something different.longjohns wrote:what soundcard?

I kill the extra copy of Live that's running in Task Manager. I've had it eating up to 1.2g of RAMDJMillsy wrote:Yep, I notice this problem yesterday as well. I tried to end process using control+alt+del but it was having non of it. Happened a few times and it sits there eating up your memory.

Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
had this happening with my novation x-station25 set to my audio device.. but only in live 8.. pulled out an old m-audio firewire card and had the same issue.
found unplugging or powering off the devices would allow live 8 to close from the taskmanager. really not sure what the issue is - everything worked well in live 7

Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
Even though you have closed LIVE the process is still showing up in the Task Manager... I battled with the same issue for a while. I installed an E-MU card to try something different. After that I had mad issues with my Alesis MM8. I tried uninstalling the drivers and cleaning them all out of the registry but it never was quite right. I finally got tired of the little quirks and crashes and reinstalled my OS and was very particular about what order I reinstalled everything (that I was keeping).
Since then I've had no issues. I think drivers and IRQ type conflicts are the issue. Software like LIVE, Cubase, Pro-Tools want to "own" your audio but when there are several driver types, plus onboard sound it can be an all out brawl since sound drivers are all written with being the boss in mind. ReWire gets the programs "in line" but old audio drivers might be shitting on your party. You have to watch out if you have automatic updates on too. Sometimes a Windows fix = jacked. Best to pick through those.
Do you have a dedicated DAW or are you doing everything from 1 PC?

Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
It's a dedicated DAW, recently built with a fresh install of vista 64. The only other program (besides the OS) was live 8 for a awhile and that still had extra instances. I have a Motu Ultralite Mk3 as my only audio interface. MB audio is off. It doesn't bother me too much, but I wanted to know how extensive this bug was.
Thanks for the suggestioons i tried them all but to no avail.

Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
My pC is also a dedicated music machine, Live 7 works fine as does every other piece of software.

same.. nothing extra installed just abelton & vstsDJMillsy wrote:My pC is also a dedicated music machine, Live 7 works fine as does every other piece of software.
had to shutdown to get the extra instance of live closed as it wouldn't even let me run another copy
tried unplugging/turning off soundcard & devices.. no luck
Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
A batch file to stop the audio service is a great work around, but at the end of the day LIVE isn't some $50.00 program that you got at Wal-Mart. I'm pretty sure everyone here has a registered copy too. Clean DAWs with fresh installs and no rubbish programs running...longjohns wrote:eventually I made a little .bat file which sits on my desktop. it stops the audio service (my card drivers run as a service) and then restarts. having a little icon for this process is really handy
This sounds like a job for the Ableton crew...
Re: Extra instances of Live 8.01
I have tried turning off my padKontrol before leaving Live and have noticed that most of the time this makes the difference. Live seems to shutdown properly (more often) when it's off. Don't ask me why but that's how it seems to work. Live doesn't seem to mind it when I leave my 100% MIDI based intruments on. But it doesn't like my USB padKontrol at all. Hope that helps.
