artists similar to 1.) The Knife, 2.) Modeselektor?

Post by dm_hawk » Tue Apr 28, 2009 7:57 pm

I discovered The Knife/Fever Ray 2 months ago, fell ga-ga in love, quickly digested "Deep Cuts" and "Silent Shout" - had the dvd shipped over from Sweden, memorized all the lyrics, etc.

1.)
The Knife - Who are some other artists who share some of the same characteristics - dark, emotional, ballsy songwriting, unconventional-sounding lead vocals, love for analog synths, tight production, concept-oriented.

2.)
Modeselektor - They have a very unique sound, and they are often billed alongside artists who are not nearly as hip-hop driven. Is there a name for the "genre" they represent? Who are some other artists with a similar feel?

Check out Salem, moody as Knife but the voices are more chopped and screwed.

Fever Ray = 1/2 of The Knife (and it shows)

Sleeparchive = Modeselektor (but without the drama and vocal) <-- rubbish comparison

this was awesome until 1:27,when the awful drums and cheezy guitar or keyboard came in.they should have used some cool electronic drums and good synths and this could have been a great song.i was ready to check them out on itunes, but when those drums kicked in.lol

I love that lanquid nylon guitar; adds a nice organic counter. The 'drums' are almost non-existant; they're more like a subtle percussive effect which works quite well.

JG, maybe this will work for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqxY6Lv1suk&NR=1

Thanks so much for the recommendations - there are quite a few I've never heard, and I look forward to checking them out.

Among the groups mentioned that I know well (the bpitch control stuff, for instance), some share individual similarities to the knife and/or modeselektor, but none of them are similar in general.

This says a lot about how individual the knife and modeselektor's music is, respectively.
