What's holding you up from buying LIVE ?
Sorry for being direct, but I really think that you are running lots of cracks in your computer.
Maybe even windows, as I don't see how else you reinstall window "quite often".
Since two years I have as studio computer a pc running win xp home original, and all the programs I have are original. Never had to do a reinstalling of windows, since everything works well.
I bought windows without the office stuff and the cost was ridicolous.
All the people I know that have to reinstall window from time to time have cracks in their pcs.
I do not think that ableton should even think about changing his copy protection policy, and I believe that if you buy it and register your copy the day you should need for some reasons a third unlock the abletons will help you.
And try to understand that they have to protect their product, thus their gain, from illegitimate use.
Tell me another way for ableton to get the cash needed to run the company and continue improving this product if not by selling copies of the software!
It's really a shame using a cracked copy of a software and then complaining on the forum that this or that is something that has to be improved or changed.
Of course constructive suggestions are always welcome in this forum.
In case I was wrong about you using cracks then I'm sorry, but if not shame on you and your fellas.
all the best and stay groovy,

Why I haven't upgraded 3.0.1 yet
1. I too hate the activation method. But it's better than iLok. That's one of the reasons I still use Win2000 and like Sonar. My music PC does not talk to the net and I hope never will.
2. Timelimited betas; 4.0.5 beta 4.1, 4.2, 4.3. 4.3.1, 4.3.1a, etc. ... Eventually hopefully Ableton will have a release they believe in. Live 3.0.1 is one of the most solid apps I have and I won't upgrade until I know it's reliable.
3. About reinstalling Windows: I ran my system for 1000s of hours without a glitch, (I do not have any cracked s/w on my system), but Sonar 4 would just not function. After trying every troubleshooting method I could think of I reinstalled Win2K and it works perfectly. Fortunately all my other apps still work fine too (Reason, Max/MSP, Sound Forge, Nero, Koan...) Some of them needed to have their license code re-entered, but the process was not that timeconsuming.
Griping notwithstanding: I'd probably still use Live if it crashed every half hour; since its workflow has made me the most productive I've ever been...

that's what i'm doing at the moment, live doesn't need that much more in midi capailities to be a cubase or logic killer, that day people that can't stand crashing or AU problems will trough their copys of digital performer or logic by the window and run to buy one of LIVE, and we are a LOT in that case ! and i'just can't wait for that day...AdamJay wrote:
with that said, if you want the unique features of Live combined with the things you still can't give up in DP - then rewire.
hey, is this that simple ? i was wondering about what would happen if for any reason i have to do a format c... i thought the computer ID changed when you reinstall (i'm on PC with Windows XP), doesn't it ?i simply backup my UNLOCK prefs folder, and restore it after formatting...
or do i have to make a Ghost of my system ?
but maybe i should ask all these questions to the abletons

Sorry for getting back to this topic, but I have accidentally found my post about current copy protection scheme used by Ableton. Actually, it's minimal's response that I would like to reply to!
My dear, I HAVE NO CRACKED SOFTWARE IN MY COMPUTER!!! I am using legal Windows XP Home Edition that I have paid for. I need to reformat my drive from time to time because on the same computer I am running completely unrelated software as well. As I'm a student, I need to have an OpenOffice package, Graphics suite, 3D modelling applications and I also do programming and web design. I share the same computer with my friend. I have my own reasons and if I want to do something, why do I have to be limited by a specific program?
So, if I pay £250 I want to make sure that I can use it whenever I want and as much as I want!
The situation is now ridiculous! Users who pay for software are much more limited than those who use cracked versions! If I am happy with (lets say) version 4 of Live, why can't I upgrade my machine 3 times and use it even after 5 years? Like with hardware - you can be sure it never expires, you can use it away from the internet. Just FEEL FREE.
There are many options - such as USB key or asking to insert original CD,...
And once again, I DO NOT USE CRACKED SOFTWARE. I just don't my freedom of choice to be limited by some stupid copy protection scheme.
I hope you understand what I wanted to say.

This may be a bit off topic, of what this topic has become, but when it comes to midi in live, I find it very extensive, especially using the keyboard. But as to what holds back people from buying Live, I'd say Live can only go so far in terms of sound stimulation, The instruments are weak in my opinion and one really needs a lot more, especially with the price of live, I would expect a little more in terms of instruments. But, ever since I was lended a copy of Reason 2.5, I have found no flaws in my setup. So, maybe you would just need a little more, a good sampler, a good synthesizer, and maybe even something like battery. After buying Live, I found myself wanting more, so what im trying to say is, Live has it all.. but If you want more, than your going to look elsewhere or find stuff to work with.
Sorry if this may be off-topic somewhat, but just giving my .02
