Depeche Mode Remix Contest with Decent Prizes

I'm not much of a remixer myself, but a Lemur and Maschine are not too shabby of prizes.

It looks like it would be fun, but I do not want to pay for part of the song. It's one of the worst songs on the album. Why couldn't they have chosen Wrong or Hole to Feed. I like the remix.nin.com better.

not if you get .wav
if you do it turns into more like a $25 dollar purchase for the .wav handling fees.
f!@# beatport; i dont buy from them normally, and completely forgot they add on an extra dollar for every download for .wav format. I mistook that both .mp3 and .wav were the same price.
that just blows. could have gone out to dinner with that money.
Stuff I actually use.
sound card, speakers, mic, MBP, Mighty Mouse, Ableton, Reason, iPad, iPhone,Touchable, Rebirth, & other apps.
Pair of Technics 1200's, and a Pioneer Mixer

Funny Lemur picture, must be one of the early models (the bevel is larger on the image than the one of the current units)

Current one is (though there might already be some units with the new logo...):

and I think I just found one of the prototypes....

Back to topic: I won't pay 4 € for the remix parts either. Not because I don't have 4 € but because I don't support this rip-off. DM and Beatport are making good promotion, I won't pay more than attention. Maybe that's the future market for music: People don't buy music any more, but they're willing to pay 4€ to get famous (and some prizes as well). I'll have to find some sponsors and do my very own remix contest.... :roll:

Agreed, thank you. I really don't mind working with mp3 samples, either. I think its a cool prize, and personally I enjoy having the material to work with.

fuck this greedy bullshit. even an amateur producer/remixer deserves to get paid for their work...not with some bullshit prize that is meager relative to the potential profit for the other parties involved. from the fine print:
1. all rights in and to any remixed versions ("Remixes") of the song "Peace" ("the Song") created by the Entrant shall be owned by Grabbing Hands Music Ltd ("GHM") and to the extent necessary the Entrant hereby assigns all rights in the Remixes of the Song to GHM throughout the World for the full life of copyright and any and all extensions and renewals thereof. If requested by GHM or EMI Music Publishing Limited ("EMI"), the Entrant shall complete and sign a formal assignment of copyright to give effect to the foregoing;

2. Martin Gore will be registered and credited as the sole writer and EMI the publishers of the Remixes of the Song created by the Entrant;

3. the Entrant will not acquire a copyright interest in the Song by virtue of creating Remixes of the Song;
grabbing hands, indeed. contributing to the writing of a song (even in the form of remixing) and then signing over copyright is considered unethical by performing rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI, SOCAN, etc).

Well, you know, the grabbing hands grab all they can...

Just wondering how do those T&Cs compare with other major band remix competitions, e.g. that Radiohead one. Is this standard stuff, or are DM being especially greedy?

probably par for the course. a lot of these types of agreements are overwritten in order to avoid any possible claims down the road in a 'better safe than sorry' sort of way. what people need to understand is that you're signing away ALL rights to any potential profit the remix makes. e.g. if a car company wanted to use the remix in an advertisement for $150,000, depeche mode and mute split the money and the remixer gets nothing. if the remix ends up getting airplay, depeche mode receives royalties and the remixer gets nothing. so dm/beatport/mute are making money off the front end by selling the stems, and then making 100% of whatever back end profit may occur. to top it off i'd be willing to bet that jazzmutant and NI donated the prizes in exchange for the publicity.
