I think you're forgetting that the apc40 is really only that appealing to us Live users. There are a lot of other DAWs out there. I think other controllers will stay plenty competitive for those. I can't really see someone wanting a clip matrix for Cubase.
excactly!

Live is great, but not the only usable audio software. there are others for other uses / workflows, too.

The keyboard version of the Remote would have really benefitted from having an angled screen.

who needs a crossfader on a midi controller? :?

I got one on my nocturn... with no use for it?

anyway the SL series seem really better now. and would be sooo great if something like farmpad (padkontrol "hacking" free tool) could be used with it, getting rid of the automap software, actually.

LED strips beside the faders to show current values would sure go a long way...it would be almost as good as motorized!

Agreed! I'd also like to see LED rings around the bottom knobs. I'm getting sick of the half-assed controllers. It's super duper that they've now got 1/3rd of the control surface perfected. Now put the damn 2nd LCD display back and put some visual feedback on the other 16 knobs/sliders!

The novation faders suck, the tilted screen would also be nice on the keyboard versions of the remote...

APC 40 is geared towards dj's and people using session view.

ok so who has made a controller in this class for the sub $500 price range for production in arrangement view?

Mackie control is awesome but twice the price?

beats me

No. I honestly dont know what I would do.
Tom Cosm has some really nice tutorials on how to take your linear based songs and chop them up to session view to play and mangle on the fly. Like a lot of people on here I do most of my doodling in session and then record and edit songs in arrangement view. Getting there from the arrangement view back to a usable session view for performance can be quite confusing unless you write really formulaic dance music.

The APC isn't about bashing out drum patterns in your studio as you smoke weed and sip Fanta. Buy a PadKontrol if that's your thing.

The APC is about having full control over your clips in Session View. It's going to kick ass for DJ'ing, live performance, improvised arrangements, and spontanious experimentation.

Nothing compares to it because nothing else has the "secret handshake", and nothing else gives you the same amount of visual feedback.

My only worry is that another type of secret handshake (vested interests- in the real world) might prevent other hardware companys from competing with AKAI.

In other words we will be in a situation where you can only do certain cool things with Live if you spend extra on a specific bit of AKAI equipment. Likewise, I worry that the introduction of MaxForLive could actually stifle innovation within Live itself, again because of vested interests.

For now though, it looks like the possibility of another company competing with the APC40 is more impossible than unlikely.
Have you seen NI's Maschine template for Live... It def has a secret handshake going on.. You must watch the tutorial video on it to see what I'm talking about.. let me find the link...hopefully this link will work if not just go to NI's website under Maschine and watch it..

http://www.native-instruments.com/newre ... ontent=477

It has some of the same features that the APC has .. the group buttons turn into arrows so you can move around the session view and launch clips and it gives feedback by blinking when the clip is playing.... you can even mute clips by hitting the pads... to the side of the pads it has its own scene button that turns the pads into launching scenes... its so dope you have to see it for yourself... I'm thinking about canceling my APC preorder and sticking with Maschine.. I don't DJ so I use it for production only.... For what its worth I dig Maschine as a midi controller along side Kore 2 and SL25 they work well together.... Yea the APC has a lot more than Maschine can offer I give it that for sure... but it just amazes me that NI was able to create this type of remote script that works in the same manner that the APC will... This should mean more companies will do the same such as Novation....

It is fucking huge. I just need the matrix:(

I made the exact same decision. I thought I was going to need an APC40 but then I realized that I never use the session view anyway so it would be complete overkill and force me to learn a workflow I don't really like. Maschine on the other hand fills gaping holes in my studio. Midi pad controller, Ableton Live control, hardware/software drum machine, step sequencing groove box (a la Roland 808), and performance based multi-FX processor.
To all those that don't use huge Session view sets and/or are in need of a pad controller should really read up on this device. I should be getting mine by middle next week and i'll let you all know what I think of it.
