I would really appreciate some help with this Midi based question. I'm quite new to Midi and to Ableton and I don't fully understand how Midi works.
I'm wondering - is it possible to have an envelope in a Midi clip which causes the Midi clip, when played, to send Midi control messages to Ableton (eg telling it to play clips). Does this require that the Midi messages from the clip are first sent out of Ableton into a translator like 'Bomes', translated into something else, and then sent back into Ableton?
The reason I'm asking is I saw a post on the Ableton DJ-ing forum where someone came up with a live beat rearranging set up in Ableton which I'd like to re-create but I don't fully understand how it works. I THINK it works in the way i describe above- he had a midi clip and he made an envelope in it which sent Midi messages out of Ableton to Bomes and back into Ableton. This envelope triggered a series of clips to record short sections of the music that was playing and he then could play these recorded sections with his Korg Padkontrol to give a beat juggling type effect.
Help with Midi Control Midi clip envelope
Re: Help with Midi Control Midi clip envelope
well to start when you reroute midi back into ableton to have the cc's control anything you need to use an external midi controller to make those initial assignments. I believe that when a cc sends a value between 64-127 its like 'on' and 0-63 is 'off' i thought i read about this in the manual once. so see if you can get that to play midi clips. then it would probably just be instead of playing just have it trigger recording. i could be wrong about this but some of this should help. could you post a link to the tutorial you watched?
good luck

Thanks for your reply. Here's the link with the tutorial I was talking about: http://controllerism.net/forum/index.php?topic=206.0
The thing I don't understand at the moment is - why does the Midi message from the Midi clip have to been sent out of Ableton into the Bomes Midi translator? Also, in the tutorial, you can see the guy has Midi cc's mapped to the clips - when I press any button, key or knob on my Midi controller to map it to a clip I see that it sends a Midi note.
