how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
ok sorry, well i am coming from a recycle/sampler/exs background of many years.
When i started chopping breaks i quickly found it was necessary to be precise. That meant listening to the breaks slices.Sticking rex markers in all over the place, especially on rolls and flams and the like.
My routine became open break in recycle, edit, save then load in exs which throws the midi in too.
Rexing beats has still proved more accurate than ableton slice to midi, to be frank.
I also found out that i wanted to avoid "awkward slices that sound cool", as that is messy.
Slice audition also Kind of helps in that you have listened to each slice whilst editing so you know whats going on a bit more.
Fuck it,Recycle it is.Back to the old skool. (Slightly bored face still)
Wont hold out any hope of support,as you guys are so against the idea! I really dont know why, as it wouldnt hurt workflow, and i am sure if they implented it well you would have wondered where it was all that time.

I honestly dont understand why you cant just move your warp markers to where you want and then slice to midi via warp marker. Isn't that what Recycle does?

Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
the OP is annoyed because he can't play the selection in the clip. Live plays a clip from the start marker and not from the currently selected warpmarker.
Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
well you can play from the warpmarker in the clip scrub area.
the problem is that it keeps going - doesn't stop after that "slice"
edit: woah, that's not nearly accurate enough, nevermind

Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
yes. the midi note has to be moved the same amount to keep the original groove.if you move the start back by 10ms, do you need to move the midi note which plays it back by 10ms also?
try to do this with some beats of about 20 slices, and you will feel like back in the middel age.
... and you will not get back the original groove !
for some people this may not be a problem, because they are used to work with the live groove presets, anyway.
and they are using clean recorded samples from commercial loop CDs.
that's very different from what i do.
i'm working with original 60s/70s vinyl samples.
and i love to keep the original (midi) groove & feeling.
(just adding some punchy sounds on top)
so,i guess that way of working is different from what those people do who don't understand the point of this threat.
(I'm just wondering why so many userers trying to give answers without understanding the question !?)
>>what guarantee do you have that you're not hearing a small amount of silence before the start?<<
my ears !
>>I think that you can address that more accurately by the visual waveform<<
no. it just helps a little.
e.g. when a crash sound is fading into the next beat. you can not see where the next beat begins, and the Live-autoslice function will not find this point, too, but you can hear it ! to find the right point you need the possibility to listen to the slice, and nothing but the slice !
ps: RECYCLE: well, recycle is a cool tool. more than 10 years old and it is still doing proper work. but the development of that tool is stopped. whilst the digital possibilities are moving on.
so there are some limitations compared to new possibilities..
does anybody mind some progress ?
Live features some progress, but has some gaps in the basics.
does anybody mind to make it perfect ?
well, to be honest, i feel like talking against a wall of magic music maker fans.
i'm sure the heads of ableton are not that stupid and they will do what's necessary, sooner or later
Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
because the chicken is funky and allways searching for the sunny side of the street
Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
I think ableton is the only program of its type (talking ANY beat chopping vst/prog) that does not allow audition of slices.
I guess its a new conundrum thrown up by turning warping into what it should have been years ago, especially now that what they call "transients" are here.
I end up squinting looking at the drum rack on a big break, hitting the play button. Then having to open the wave window in sampler and all that fiddliness.
Just let me look at the clip and do it please, and then slice....
As it is not strictly a "performance" feature i guess it does not have priority, and also seems to be baffling a lot of people here.
It's definately something you need to do sitting down!

Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
you should post a sample file for everyone to slice. one that you just can't get right. then people will understand, once they try and fail
Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
I can slice any break and get it to "work" in the end.
What you dont seem to be getting is that me and chicken are saying that on the way to a cleanly transposable,in time breakbeat we want and need to hear the slices individually before they are sliced to midi.
It's not that hard to undertsand.
Not being able to do this sucks. SIMPLE.
Its a philosophy that is the opposite of slicing to 8th,16th, etc. I have NEVER done this. But i bet all you MPC/90-100bpm guys do.which is fine but....
You will find all dnb producers in agreement.
In fact as far as i know, im the only one (in my producers circle) even trying to use ableton fully, and something like this is a big put off to other daw heads. ASide from exs single import limitation.
You dont think for example Photek DIDNT listen to all his slices before he exported do you? You need to do this, it part of the science!
I would really like to know from someone at ableton if it's even possible, cos it probably isnt or it would be there.
is it??

Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
Its not the most elegant solution but slicing to midi drum rack and then going through and changing your start/end loop brackets on each drum slice while playing it on the keys does work rather well.
Re: how to listen / play from one marker to the next ?
you can be sure it is possible.I would really like to know from someone at ableton if it's even possible
and it's quite easy to put into practice.
they don't need to program a new instrument, nor an extra algo.
it's just a simple funktion.
don't worry 'bout the board-spamers.
really, i've been surfing alot of forums the past ten years.
but i've never experienced so much non-qualified and decunstructiv postings.
so much dirty words.
i'm sorry for those who are serious.
it's a shame !
if i could decide, i would prefer that ableton first cleans up this board befor doing any other enhancements. that would help more than any other thing.
... or they should open a password protected area for serious users, producers and professionals.
