Newbie help... making tunes

Post by pacmaniac » Thu May 14, 2009 1:01 am

First of all.... hello board

This is my 1st post hopefully ill be able to find some help on here, now ive currently been learning from the sonic academy tutorials and im reading ableton live 7 power at the minute (bit long winded) and doing a course at ayr college next month...

So seasoned pros... whats the best learning resource on how to make tracks rather than a detailed description of what every single button does... we all wanna make music at the end of the day so im asking you guys how you all learned.

Welcome to the board. I use the in-program tutorials on each release to learn all the basics.... Then do lots of playing, just turning knobs to see what they do. Another thing I've done in the past while learning is to try to recreate tracks that I like from other artist. What this does is force you to not just use the presets as-is, so you start to learn to manipulate the instruments and fx to get the results you need. once you get past that then start hitting up the tips and trix forums and vids.

The only time I tried emulating a song the results were disastrous. Different strokes.

Do what feels good for you. Since you will be obsessing over each creation, you might as well enjoy it.

Be patient and keep at it.

Honestly the best Idea I can give is go off of a basic tutorial and then just mess with everything. Sure the first things will sound lame but as you PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE you will improve. Its how I learned... and after 8 years I almost sound Pro... :D.

Maybe you'll get done sooner.
