So Ive been having a ton of problems with Live 8. One thing that is annoying me is that when it does crash (which is at least once an hour) it doesnt seem to let go of the system resources. That is, it will still be using up memory in the system resources and if i try to open again it says live is already running and i have to reboot the computer to get it going again. Also it is very sluggish. Opening Live takes about 2 minutes until the splash screen appears. Also opening the preferences tab takes about a minute and a half. And some ableton plugs like collision take literally 4 minutes to load! Now i also have cubase 4 and reason and they are running absolutely fine with the same plugs so i cant see it being the computer. This only started happening since goin to 8.02 from 8.01. Its very frustrating! No way I'd be using this onstage
Win XP Pro SP 2
Intel Xeon Quad X3220 @ 2.4 gHz

the topic made me lol!
i got a similar problem: i close Live and everything seems fine but Live is actually still running in the background (cause might of course be a vst, instead of Live)
to the OP: doesn't ending the task via task manager work? (ctrl+alt+del) - it does here...

Yes,
you must restart the PC: enough duration to forget which song I am working on

Unfortunately, I cant end the process in task manager. It does nothing when i try. When i get the "serious error" message (which is sometimes) before a crash then i can reopen straight away. Maybe its a plug hanging on. Because i have windows error eporting turned off live usually just disappears midsong without a trace. The long loading times are driving me nuts. I would go back to version 7 but i have some songs done in 8 that wont be backwards compatable? I will at least see if those delays happen in V.7 also.

Could it be one of your MIDI controllers? If you are getting regular crashes, simplify your MIDI devices and see if you have the same problem.
I've had this with crashes in the past and could never figure it out.
I also would right click on the Live in processes and click end process system tree. Still would take minutes. I'd usually reboot--not happy about that.
MIDI/USB devices that I use included MAudio O2, Trigger Finger, MPD24, Novation 25SL, Frontier Tranzport and ILOK.
Ableton needs to fix this.

yeh annoying, i like to remove each plugin. then re-add them till i find the culprit. Its normally always 3rd plgins that cripple ableton for me.

While still having the tediously long loading times Ive managed to track down specific problems in 2 different sets to NI Massive. Even just opening the plugins editor results in a crash. Bummer as i need those sounds to finish a couple these tracks! Anyone else had a problem with Massive on windows with Live 8? Strange as its been working fine up until recently. Also massive works fine in cubase.

delete the database file of Massive, it probably got corrupted
it should rebuild when you restart Massive (preferably the standalone one)

favorite topic title ever.
and very well describe ableton live 8.
just like 7.
8.0.3 is out, but im still avoid of installing it.
a software wich is designed to do LIVE gigs (as its name promises) shouldnt let just crash and misbehave.
i am waiting for the time we can leave the cd-player live-acts....
7.0.15 is stable however..its old and from the absolute unusable 7.0.1 to stable 7.0.15 the way was way too long...
i suggest dont expect anything better than that with L 8.

Yeah the more I read the more I love my fully functional and finally completely dependable copy of LIVE 7.
I think they do make American cars like that though...
