General Performance

Post by Zenda » Thu Apr 30, 2009 8:08 pm

Hi everyone,

I don't want to stir up hatred against ableton, cause its an great software concept.
But I think one thing nobody mentioned is the deficit in performance especially on macs (also mac pros) compared to logic.
For example I load 2 seperate reaktor instruments the cpu usage gets very high, instead doing the same in logic I get no cpu usage to worry about my future working processes.
Has anyone an answer for this ?
Should we wait for live 9 to get an better integrated software in macosx ?

Thanks

I have no issues with the performance of Live 8. If you use the same settings/instruments/effects the CPU util. is about the same as Live 7. Complex Pro and Collision/Corpus can be very processor hungry but I think that's the same on Windows. Live 8 should be more efficient on machines with more than 2 cores but that's a bit more difficult to test.

No you missunderstood. Also Live 7 has performance issues..I thought L8 would change that...but no chance

Please post your system specs - also it´s quite difficult to compare Live with Logic (warp etc.).

even when I switch warp modes off.. I come better with logic concerning performance...

the same problem here..with LIVE 8.02 (but also with previous versions)

Logic is (much!) faster than live (warp mode switched off)
on same session.. :?

in fact : logic arrives much less quickly at overload and seems more solid!

I will say that all the plugs in live are particularly hungry….
5/6 tracks are often enough... :?

I think it's a real problem!!
and many people around me made this report by comparison with the others DAW (especially logic..I must be honest...maybe he is more optimised for OSX??..)

i really love Live
and i'd like to see my favorite soft fast just like the others DAw

but actually i can't use only live because of this problem..

yes exactly the same,
thanks for ur comment

Its a pitty that nobody could say anything concerning this.
The Software integration is not good as it is in other daws...like logic etc...
when we would install windows on our apple systems, i imagine we could get better results..
did anybody tried ?

Well on windows, I noticed that the CPU usage is quite a bit higher under live 8 than under live 7, even using the same VSTi etc ... I'm quite often reaching more than 100% of CPU usage (which as you can imagines makes the whole program unusable) while it never happend under live 7. I guess the next updates should fix that ...

Now under live 7 I didn't find the performance to be bad. Of course, I can't compare with Logic, I'm a PC user ...

Im having no such problems, maybe because I'm using he new core i7 processors on my mac pro. I run intense sessions with many effects across 20+ tracks an always 4 constant plugins on my master track. I will be installing XP via bootcamp this week and will do some testing.

I think it's precisely for that..

more seriously, I think that if it is necessary to have a 8cores so that our software is stable. .it's a little bit tedious..

A friend also uses a mac pro, and speaks of same problems with performance compared to logic...
I heard a little about the so called cpu throttling (I can come along with this problem when I switch coolbook to cpu overload 3..)
anybody knows about throttling ("cpu steps") ?
maybe your new processors solved that problem.. but could you try with bootcamp on your macbook pro please ? cause this is similar my setting...

jeffx is right, a stable well integrated software should run on "normal machines" as well ;)

thx for ur comments
