Live & Windows system Crashing? Related I don't know

Post by meantown » Tue May 19, 2009 4:46 am

I'm having some kind of Virus problem. Please it is still not solved. I have 3 hard drives. One drive for the system, one drive for VST's Abe Library instruments, , etc., and one for Audio recordings (Live Sets).

The files would vanish but the folder structure would stay intact in the beginning. All my files on the Instruments drive started vanishing I went from 80% memory use to 13%. System drive did similar. Folder structure at first looked intact but all files underneath vanished, then the folders would vanish over time (less then hours).

I noticed it first when Ableton became sluggish going into Record. It would start recording but it would take like 15 seconds for the screen to suddently catch up. It became worse and Live wouldn't load. Thats when I researched and saw that the files were vanished from Instruments Drive (Ableton Library etc.). Then the Files were vanishing from the C System Drive, quickly after that the computer would no longer boot.

Started reformatting the drives and Clean install WindowsXP, etc.

I don't know exactly why the machine is having all the problems. I don't and it's maddening. Here is the link to the Asus Forum where I am working on the problem.

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id= ... -us&page=3

I have now this week as of today May 18, 2009 Reloaded the Asus Motherboard Bios (current 2108). Slipstream the Lastest Version of WINXPPro with Service Pack 3 and Updates. I have bought and installed BitDefender 2009 AntiVirus program. I have finished loading all the drivers. Live 8.02 update downloaded and scanned. Suite from Box set again. Everything seemed to be installed correctly. Scanned everything as installed, multiple Restore points.

I had hoped it was solved today. This is what I got up to when I turned it on.

The problem right now seems to be on the E: Audio drive. I save a Live Program to the Audio drive (Drive E) and when I come back to it (today) after turning the computer off (last night). The Folder is there but the actual Ableton song file is missing. For instance using SAVE As save in a folder 'Live' subfolder 'DBLive' as a song set file 'GodhelpMe051709'. I come back later and and the set file is gone. GONE. Of course this is as of today and I just turned it on to find this out. I will see if and how it progresses right now. I've now changed Temporary Folder from E drive to C Drive and the Cache Folder from E Drive to C Drive. Running Bit Defender and I'll see after this letter if it saves and more importantly if it is there to Open after I boot down then up.

Last week it was both of the other drives; C Drive Instruments / D Drive Ableton Library/Instruments. As I type this C & D Drives seem to be alright.

Can you see that not being able to keep from losing the Set File makes Ableton not useable.

I use my old Mac G4 for the Internet, which is what I'm typing on.

I call Ableton 1 (646) 723-4572 tech line today and it's busy, constantly busy.

After the letter below I went on to find that loading the Stereo Packages should be installed before the LE Stereo Pakages. Unistalled and Reinstalled Packs. Only Cold Tight DrumKit never worked correctly. It would not play sound. Unistall Pack. Reinstall same problem.

After that all hell broke loose.

HERE IS THE LETTER TO ABLETON TECH SUPPORT THAT WAS NEVER RESPONDED To; SENT MAY 10, 2009: THIS IS LAST WEEK. AT THE BEGINNING

I bought the Live 8 Suite. I originally downloaded and authorized the program so I could start using it at the time. It ran fine for the week or so before the box set showed up.

When the box set showed up I started to load all the suite instruments.

I'm not sure that some how I didn't get a virus or something because something went wrong with the loading of the Ableton library packs. It would say that there was a duplication of a file. Coming up with the dialog did I want to replace or keep the files. If I said replace it would not go further; if I said keep it would go forward but there was always a reference to a file ??. It's hard to remember accurately what happened.

Anyway when I went to run the Live 8 my computer completely started to run slow and erractically the Live 8 screen would take about 15 seconds to catch up with what was happening when I started to record audio tracks.......

I have 3 main drives that I use. One for the computer system, one for the instruments, sound files, etc, and one for audio recording. The Live 8 program started freezing up constantly then it wouldn't open at all. The computer started to become unstable. On examination I discovered that files were erasing from my drives. Starting on the instrument drive; it would leave the folder structure but all individual files were gone. It preceded onto slowly destroy the main system drive also. Folder structures looking intact. but the individual files gone. It went from 80 per cent of the drive being used to showing only 13 per cent used on the Instrument drive and similar problem on the main system drive before the computer system would no longer boot. Strangely the audio drive was never effected.

I always try to keep this Win system offline except for authorizing so it would not be attacked by a virus. I had a few VST files that I had downloaded from the net to my Mac which I transferred over using a CD. Though I hadn't installed them yet. I'm not sure still of the cause of what happened.

So using my WinXP installation disk I reformatted the main drive and did a clean install. I reformatted the other drives as soon as WinXP opened and I could use the format tool. Installed all the drivers for hardware etc. All seemed to be working fine.

I've gone on to load the Live 8.0 from the Suite Box Set and authorized it online. Same computer, etc.

So then I drug the live packs from the DVD's the only place they seem to react was into the browser area. I did this by dragging there folders onto the browser. They seemed to use about 23 Gbytes.

I started to use the program then I realized that they (live pack sounds) were not "Installed".

Okay here is the problem. In the Browser. It would show all the Live Packs and that I would need to "Install Live Pack". So I started with the EIC PACKAGES. EIC2 packages that I installed seem to be okay.

Beginning with the LE STEREO PACKAGES each Package would say "Installation Not Finished Successfully D:\Abe8\Samples\Components\Utility\Silent.aif cannot be deleted".
I would try Install again and then it would say "Installation has finished successfully Session Drums Ambient Loud Punch Le already installed".

Now if I went to use it in a midi track it would show visually in the Drum Kit that it worked but no audio would be audible or would visually show for the track or into the master display.

Anything from LE Stereo Packages would have this problem. ie. Session Drums Ambient Loud Punch Le, Big Punch Le, etc.

Also when going to each package it would say the size of the package for instance 266 Mbyte and that there was 198.8 Gbyte on the drive available, This 198.8 Gbyte would never change with each succesive Package Install attempt of the other Packs.

When I looked into the folder D:\Abe8\Samples\Components\Utility\Silent.aif. It seems to have created a copy for each attempt. ie. Silent.Aif, Silent.Aif-2, Silent.Aif-3, etc. for each attempt to install those packs.

I realize now that the original download I did at the time of buying was 8.01. Since the crash I just downloaded from the Live8 Suite which is 8.0 and that is what was used above. So now I've gone on to download Live 8.02 from the update in Live 8.

I'm not sure how I should proceed. Whether I need to load 8.02 and reinstall the whole library?? Authorizing how??

Showing In PREFERENCES / USER ACCOUNT LICENSES : AVAILABLE PRODUCTS;
Live Version 8.0
Software Instruments: Operator, Sampler, Electric, Tension, Analog, Collision
Sampled Instruments: Essential Instrument Collection, Drum Machines, Session Drums, Latin Percussion

Showing In PREFERENCES / LIBRARY/ D:\ABE8 / LIVE PACKS
Live Pack, Analog, Collision, Drum Machines LD, EIC2 Brass, EIC2 Choir, EIC2 Grand Piano, EIC2 Keys, EIC2 LE, EIC2 Percussion, EIC2 Strings, Electric, Live8 Lessons, Live8 Library, Operator, Sampler, Tension.
All these seem to be working fine as far as I can tell.

The bad LE STEREO PACKAGES individually show up here also. I have not proceeded onto STEREO PACKAGES or MULTIMIC as I believe it is futile right now.

Here is from Asus post the crash just before these letters:

I ended up starting and reloading WinXPPro slipstreamed with SP3 and Automatic Updates off and just Custom loaded in Windows Update. Loaded BitDefender. I've ran Bit Finder on everything. Restore Points all the way through. Seemed to stop the windows problems.

In scanning everything at one point BitFinder found one file it didn't like a WinSys cookie file and deleted it.

Strangely at one point I found 386 and another Win file on my clean formatted to empty E: Drive. Which is where I put my Live sets with Audio Files. I scanned them with BifDefender and said they were alright. I moved them into the Recycle Bin. Strangely today the files were not in the Recycle Bin. It was empty and I’m sure I did not empty it as I debated it overnight whether I shoud have.

I'm using Ableton Live8 Suite the latest version 8.02 for Audio Recording. When you buy the box set they let you downoad and use the program until the Box Set shows up with the Suite instruments. It ran fine for the 2 weeks I used Live 8. It all started from when I loaded the Suite instruments..

Originally in the course of adding the Suite instruments it said it found duplicate files and gave me the choice of keeping or replacing. It wouldn't proceed without me choosing keep, I eventually chose keep all. From there it was all downhill. In use I noticed Live getting increasingly sluggish going into Record mode. Starting to Record but waitng 15 seconds before the screen would catch up to the recording process that has started.
Eventually the program would crash and no longer open.

On examination of my D Drive when I kept the Itunes library. Stereo mixdowns etc. but most importantly the Live Instruments. They had all vanished the drive (250 Gbyte Sata) went from 80% use to like 13%. The system Drive C started doing the same thing vanishing files, percentage of drives used suddenly much lower. Folders in the beginning would show intact but inside of them no files.

It quickly progressed to where the System would no longe boot.

Which is what started me on the path of completely Cleaning the Drives. Motherboard Bios Upgrade, complete Clean install and upgrade of WinXpPro, etc. Starting this Post on this forum. All week long, everyday, researching and still.........

Everything seemed to look fine as of late last night of May 17. I had gotten through the whole system reloaded drivers, Updates, etc. to Live 8 installed (unpacked) the Instruments. Only.....

When I saved a Live Set last night; today the Ableton Live Set file is missing. Kind of like being decapitated. This is the same thing that has been happening on subsequent reloading of the whole system. Losing Ableton Live Set files.

I’ve ran BitDefender it scans All Systems okay. Sent letters to Ableton. Going to their forum next. I have problem with running out of Live Authorizations now also.

Obviously an Ableton Set file vanishing and thus not being able to reopen makes Live 8 unuseable.

If past history repeats this file vanishing will go on to being massive files vanishing and the system not working.

What’s next the plague.

I've sent these to tech support and now I'm out of authroizations.

I'm trying a different drive to boot to see if it's a bad hard driver (controller).

Hard to have brevity. Hard to know what the hell is really the cause of all this.

Personally I'm a little leary of everything downloaded now. Only Live Disk is 8.0 and the latest version is 8.02. Which I downloaded.

Anybody else out there having similar problems?

The system crashed again. The computer system had seemed stable. Read my last post for everything that I've done in trying to get this fixed.

I loaded through to all the instruments in Ableton. Made and saved a Live set. Shut down. Reloaded program. Live Set file was there. Very simple set the default not the lesson.

It took awhile to load and once it did. I was trying to get through to send you Log. txt. Didn't last that long. This message from Windows came up.

WINDOWS FILE PROTECTION

Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain stability. Windows must restore the original versions of these files.
C:windows\Service pack files\i386/gdiplus.man is not available.

Screen went black then computer went down. Trying to startup computer system. Window System boot.ini. I believe the file was not available.

If you've read the previous Email I sent you understand what I've been going through here.

Latest guess is if it's not virus, or worm it might be a hard drive controller. I'm trying to reload system with one of the other hard drives. See if I get stability before I try Live 8 again.
