Actually, the most hungry Reaktor patches I've come acrost are in the 40% range. For a single patch ...

The average patch on this Operator - as I said - is about 10 -15% on my Athlon 2600.

Which is pretty easy on the CPU compared to my other favorites - Reaktor, z3ta+ ... especially considering the sounds I've been getting out of this thing tonite.

Concurrently I get about 55% on my dual Gig at the worst, Reactor is optimized for altivec though, and I wonder if that works in the least as plug in, in Live? I guess it does help a bit? Dunno? "the worst patch" isn't a scientific analogy in the least.....

Adam you were trolling, if you want to argue about it, whatever.
You know you were! :P

okay well maybe i was 49% trolling, but i was at the very least 51% pointing out some key similarities.

in all seriousness tho, and with the troll hog-tied in my back pocket... Operator isn't a hog by any means on this machine. but then neither is Reaktor, or Ableton Reverb @ "First Class" setting.

Doom 3 on the other hand!!!!!!! :x

Typical PC bait , you know it.
I, like a lot of mac users have many reason for using them over PC, and every time some guy who's decided that speed is the bottom line throws out some simple minded reasoning why his choice is better, or in your case, states "facts" , we are expected to either roll over and accept that you in fact have made the "right choice", or explain ourselves.
Why try to convert everybody to your "choice"? I could give two shits whether you use mac or not. I know you like OSX, I know you love your PC and Live.
Personally I use Live 4 as a live instrument, and compose in Logic, before that it was Digital performer. I've tried SX and Sonar, I don't particularly care for them, good for others not for me. There are tools on the mac side I don't want to part with just so I can use some CPU pig like Live 4 to it's fullest. I find the MIDI side of Live to be still in it's infancy, good for live use though! :)

Stating that "neither is Reactor" AFA CPU, hmmm? that goes directly against what you wrote in your request for dual support? :P

And I'm seeing about 20% on a complex patch with 16 voices on a 933 PIII(practically Stone Age as far as a PC goes) :? .Maybe a Mac problem or a configuration problem in general?

yea, i guess my use of Reaktor has changed since i discovered Plogue Bidule. i'm letting go of the Reaktor nut sack, at least temporarily.

as far as Macs go and speed not being the bottom line. yea yea i know i know. Form over Function right? Style over Substance... yea apple's REAL great at that. As in totally abandoning function and substance. they just put 4200rpm drives in their newest desktop computers, because they wanted to make them 6.5" squares rather than 7" squares.
"hmm, we could add half an inch to both sides, and save $ on using desktop HDs, seems smart... then again if we make it EVEN smaller they'll go nuts at MWSF anyway!!, then when folks realize how much slower it 'feels', they'll shell out more for an eMac!!!"

BTW you KNOW OSX is designed to sell hardware right? Candy Coated Unix Dweeb heroin is what it is!

Right, you're missing the point entirely. I use software besides Live that I love, that is mac only. I do not like the PC equivalent. You might be happy with the software choices on PC and I just might be happy with the choices I have on mac? That's life.

My take on the value of different DAWs in order of appreciation.

Logic,
Digital performer,
Live 4,
SX,
Pro Tools,
Sonar....

Get it? I like the software choices on a mac better. I don't care what you use to make music, I don't get into these kinds of ridiculous debates with all my PC friends in real life, just with internet bullies that have a need to prove,
Apple= bad
PC = good
Am I expected now to point out all the ugly things that Microsoft has done to the computing experience in defense? Is that what I'm supposed to do?

They're corporate entities, they all suck shit.

I'm happy with what I use, Live works fine for me, and I get tired of people accusing me and others of not making the "right choice", it's fucking ridiculous. Why do you care? I don't get it? Did Steve Jobs steal your motorcycle and take your woman? What's with the personal vendetta?

normal cpu usage

Post by holterzoff » Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:38 am

i've got normal cpu usage (keys vs bells) up to 25 % in peaks
(1.7 centrino 512mb onboard sound) with my echo card might be even less.
seems t be a mac problem and will be surely solved in the next update.

not the slightest reason to come up with a boring pc vs mac thread, or megaboring i don't want the operator demo in my menu; it is too expensive; its sound is not my taste garbish.

greetings and have fun

Not a mac problem, Operator is eating up way more CPU than it should on any system IMO. You with a Centrino should get less than 10% for a pretty standard FM synth, not 25%

Once again, considering Live doesn't make any real use of dual CPUs, my dual Gig with Live performs like a 1Ghz machine. Centrinos are amazing chips, and yours being almost twice as fast as mine, with a bigger system bus, should be twice as efficient, and it is. Operator still doesn't perform as good as it should on a PC is what I'm saying.

to save cpu power, disable spread(0%), reduce the number of maximal voices and disable HQ.

I had a setup using 6 operators, one for bassdrum, one for snaredrum, one for hihats, bass, organ and fx plus some compressor2s, delays, eqs and the cpu never went above 15% on my 2ghz athlon 64.

I would just like to point out that - in over ten years of this sh*t, I have never once been sucked into a Mac vs PC debate

I'm proud of that. I just thought you should all know that

Hi

I think the operator is fantastic ..
I _CAN_ make it use 80% of my CPU ... but I dont need to .. you can easily manage operator at aberage of 10-15% .. maybe 20% ...
and dont use that spread thing ,.. rather use a effect for same effect ;)

cheers

yeah chorus would do it

or, create two channels and feed them from the operator MIDI channel. pan them L / R

then create clips in the two channel with panning clip envelopes, like a slow moving LFO. I think that would work. No extra CPU
