i'm sorry but this so off the mark.
One the reason why young kids say this is cause all they want is more more more, this is drilled into them from a early age by Parent, the government (especially if your american) and the media.
The dont care about how it sounds only that they have 100 days worth of degraded music. And MP3 allows them to do this, one cause you can find MP3 for free and at least for a small amount.
As for the vinyl part... people prefer vinyl due to the fact it produces a higher spectrum of sound.
With music in a computer you can only get tones up to 22K (44.1 k sample rate/nyquiest theory) using A-D/D-A Convertors.
But with vinyl these overtones stay in the signal allows for more even harmonics creating that pleasant warm sound.
And you say the kids prefer MP3 over Vinyl or WAV do they even know any better....
If you play Justin Timberlake on Mp3 then Mozart or Cream on Vinyl of course there going to say MP3... One there not listening for the sound difference they are listen to the music they like.

With getting feedback on projects it does well to have MP3's available for others to comment etc, some aren't willing to wait for a 40mb file to download when a 16mb MP3 will suffice for general feedback.

A program i have always used, and is somewhat unknown, is WavePad ( not Wave lab ). It is produced by a company called NCH and has a free version as well, which covers the basics of converting files etc and tweaking a little here and there.

I'm not a top end producer, still very new to this ( 4 weeks with ableton, my first production projects on the go ) so i use this and i imagine others will find a use to need/want to convert their WAV files.

http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html gives you a 1 month free trial of the full program or scroll down the page to the FAQ and click it...this will give you a link to the free version.

Hope it helps

Paul

I've added a right-click convert to MP3 192kbps to the Windows explorer that uses the lame encoder.

God help the future of music if people actually intend to make music that is of an inferior quality because they genuinely think they prefer the sound.
What a load of shite.
Really annoys me when I hear a track that is so obviously encoded around the 128kbps rate, it just says to me that the person that encoded it has no regard for sound quality and capturing the true qualities of a track.
I'm all for mp3 and hardly buy vinyl or cds at all these days but I will not accept anything less than 320kbps... Once you sacrifice the quality you can't revive that file back to it's original sound. It's like buying a really badly scratched vinyl - you're stuck with it!!
