Allow Multiple Instances

Post by danika » Mon May 25, 2009 1:26 am

I have Allow Multiple Instances enabled in Preferences. However, when I open a second instance of Live it comes up in rewire mode. Is that the only way you can run more than one instance? Is there any way I can bring a second instance of Live up without it being in rewire mode?

You could try and delete the rewire files used by Live (locations will vary depending on your OS).

Hmmmm. So apparently nobody tries to run multiple instances. What do you do when you're working on one project and want to check out something in a project that you've done previously?

Simply save the current project and launch the other maybe?

Yeah, works for getting a small amount of info, but pretty cumbersome otherwise. In Cubase, for example, I can open another project and copy and paste portions of one track from one project to another or display both projects on the screen and duplicate the mixer settings of one project to the other project.

Oops yeah I misunderstood.

In this case, I use to select and copy clips on a project.
Then open your other project and paste! Simply >>> it's working.

Obviously, if you copy audio clips, you have to paste them on audio tracks, same for midi clips.

Ok it's not so efficient as in cubase as you said but it's possible...

i run 2 instances sometimes but don't use rewire. never had any problems with any functionality tho, so unless you need rewire is it a problem it comes up like that?

The second instance says it's coming up as a rewire slave because a rewire host is already open. But the rewire doesn't really work because it's not a slave to the first Live instance. So the audio is disabled. I can open a project in the second instance, but I can't play it.

I've used Live as both a rewire host and a rewire slave with other apps and that works just fine (as long as you don't try to use multiple processors; in three years they've never gotten that to work right).

just tried this again. have 2 instances of live 8.0.3. running, both playing audio. not sure why you have no audio in the 2nd instance...

I've never tried running multiple instances personally, but a couple of things that I have done to get round this:

a) you can drag individual clips/tracks from the browser on the left into a project from other projects.

b) I some times use itunes to listen to audio stems from other projects as i can quickly skip through to the suitable section (although I think this might be redundant in live 8 with the new audio previewing, not sure though as im on 8).

Admittedly this doesnt answer the original question, but I guess its another way round this problem
MBP 2.4, Live 7, Logic 8, Maschine, Audio 2 DJ, Sennheiser HD 25 1 II, M-Audio Fasttrack Pro, Komplete 6, Novation Nocturn, Alesis Micron, Jap Fender Jaguar, lots of guitar pedals...

I tried a couple of other things, and the problem seems to be with my audio interface not sharing drivers. I use an old M-Audio Delta 1010. The ASIO drivers won't work at all in the second instance, but the DirectX drivers will. Of course, the latency on the DX drivers is terrible, but at least it plays.
