Questions on potential uses for iphone....

Post by weeddigger » Tue May 26, 2009 10:28 pm

Do you download music from your iphone? How fast is it compared to downloading music on a DSL modem?

Is there a way to use the internet provided by an iphone on a macbook pro laptop?

I was looking at the apple web site and they mention that you get a youtube app to view youtube. Does that mean that you wouldn't be able to view youtube if you didn't have the app?

Are there websites you can't view on an iphone? Websites that if you don't have that app, you don't get to do it right?

I remember seeing something about a soundcloud app somewhere, and I think I've heard about a Beatport app, but does that mean that these sites are currently inaccessible, or maybe they are just not as cool when viewing on an iphone, compared to viewing on a laptop...And viewing with these apps is better?

....

Also if you don't mind...

What don't you like about your iphone?

I don't download music on my phone but since it connects to a wireless network to do it I wouldn't imagine it would be much slower than a computer doing it. Also I believe you have to be connected to a wifi network to get music, won't do it off the cell signal. I could be wrong though.

Not sure what you mean on your second question, but it doesn't double as a wireless modem if that is what you mean.

The youtube app has been built into the iphone since it was first released….part of the phone, not an extra download.

A lot of companies made alternative custom sites for the iphone but if they didn't then they work and view just like they do on a computer but a lot smaller, but you can still zoom and whatnot to make the focus bigger.

Companies and people are constantly making iphone apps (even when they shouldn't) so just do searches in itunes to see who currently has an app and how it benefits the phone.

An iphone isn't a substitute for a full computer so lower your expectations a bit. Also they are doing a major OS upgrade soon, I think next month, and that will bring a lot more to the table.

Thanks man...

My intentions are to replace my current phone, and possibly how I connect to the internet. I was thinking that the iphone could double as a wireless modem, that would be awesome, but you say no?

Ehh... too bad...

Even still, going with an iphone and using the internet off that thing might be more cost effective to me than paying for a cell phone, and an internet provider as two separate bastards...

1. not sure how fast a dsl modem downloads songs, but it's about a minute on the 3g network.

2. this is called tethering, and is NOT currently supported with the iphone. maybe in the next os, i've heard rumors. there have been people who have 'jailbrake'd' their phones, and made this possible.

3. the youtube app is built in, out the box. and it's fantabulous.

4. not sure, but you can't view most streaming videos, due to lack of flash player etc. not sure if this will change soon, but surely it will. this forum shows up fine :) and if you use safari, you can sync all of your bookmarks and such.

not too sure about soundcloud, i couldn't get some files to play, haven't tried again, but you sure can view it. i've never been to beatport, so, dunno.

quick replies on the forum are ace, longer ones suck. perfect for reading tho. i'm a forum junkie, and since i got my iphone, i spend less music making time on the forum, since i can read during my little breaks at work and such. not too much i don't like about the phone, the bill is a little steep, and you cannot get insurance on it, only applecare (get a good case, and a good screen protector, esp if you are clumsy like me). some people don't like the sms texting, as it does not do pics, but that doesn't bother me. some apps (stickwars fo'sho) drain the living shit out of the battery, internet cruisin is actually pretty easy on the battery. apps that are larger than 10 megs nust be downloaded via airport (any wifi hotspot will do, and when you find a network you can latch on to, there is a popup to inform you of it) or thru itunes on your 'puter. syncing larger apps can be time consuming, and i haven't found a really easy way of syncing photos (right now i make a folder in iphoto, then it shows up in the list in itunes, under the photo tab for the device), drag and drop would be preferable.
basic functions of the phone are very nice, pretty fucking intuitive, you'd have to be a moron not to figure out how to do most common things pretty quickly. i've had phones that were a nightmare to do basic shit like saving contacts and such, all that is a breeze.

and don't pay for ringtones. you can make your own, as long as the tune you want to 'tone isn't drm'd...

(wait for the ad to go away, it does automatically)

oh yeah, rumor mill sez an update is imminent, i'd recommend waiting a wee little bit, the processor is getting an upgrade, and the memory will prolly double.

i like the damn thing, and i've done nothing musical with it... yet

You also said that apps larger than ten meggs can't be downloaded without being connected to wifi/airport?

That would kind of kill this thing being used to replace my current internet solution...

i tried to download a live update once, no dice  so, yeah, not a replacement, more of a companion internet  you could see if att has a package deal for their internet, that they can tack on the same bill, or something, keep in mind, you pay 40 bucks a month for the data package, that's non-negotiable. cheapest bill you'll see is ~80 bucks. definitely a luxury... i waited a long time, and played with my wife's for months before i fully decided. if the company work phones weren't att, i would have not gotten one.

See mate, no worries for answering after me cause you cleared up something I was unsure of in my response. :)

Now I want to punch myself in the face for being American and using the word "mate".

While I generally love the iPhone I do have some complaints, although a number of things are being adressed in the upcoming 3.0 update.

I was floored to find out you couldn't send a picture in a text (MMS) for example; that's just ridiculous! No iPhone user should be cool with that or justify it by saying things like "MMS is on its way out" or "why need it when you can use email" - that's absurd. Many other things this "smartphone" can't do, like zoom the camera or handle contact groups are things I could do three phones ago. The battery life is barely acceptable (mine's better than my GF's, so they do vary), and AT&T service is on the flakey side. I never had a dropped call with Verizon, now it's a regular thing.

Still, I can't find a phone (on Verizon at least) that I'd want in place of it. The Blackberry's come closest, but Verizon cripples their BB's by not allowing 3G and WiFi on the same phone. and while I desperately miss the tactile feel of physical buttons for texting/typing, the BB's keys feel awfully cramped and hard to type on. I so wish the iPhone would get a slide-out keypad like the new Nokia or HTC's phones - they're very slick. But I know that won't happen...

Of course the Apps are the big selling point, and one thing I am looking forward to is the further development of the iPhone as a legit music-making platform. It's well on its way and should only get better and better!

This all depends on where you live. AT&T has a way better signal in the Bay Area of CA than Verizon. There's a lot of different terrain here and I get a strong signal in areas that Verizon customers don't get any signal.

I'm sure there's probably some web site(s) that can tell you which carrier has the best signal in your area.
