hmmmmm Apc40

Post by Steve_j » Sat May 30, 2009 1:03 pm

Hmmm just picked mine up this morning, to be honest so far not so good....

Good things first. Nice layout, plenty of space, good feel on the knobs (i usually dont like endless encoders but these are ok) the faders are quite solid which i like and the cross fader is much more fluid. The buttons feel good and the package feels like a tank, Really solid, but for me thats where the fun has ended.

First up ableton wouldnt recognise the apc (Legit version of ableton) so i installed Live on another OS on a differnt partition. This time with a bit of hastle i got live to recognise the apc. There is a conflict between the apc and my external soundcard so i have to use the onboard one. I set up a little set, had a little jam only running about 6 audio track, 2 midi and a few effects, all up about 15 clips was having a bit of fun for about half and hr then everything started to click and pop and now i have given up.... not happy really, Not sure if the problem is with my apc, the apc 40 in general or my setup. Am at a bit of a loss right now.... Will let you know more later but i would say hold of for now if you were thinking of buying one.

I posted this in bug forum:

My APC is not working nice with the EQ 8.
Anybody has the same problem?
And somewhere i read that someones faders for volume controll
seemed like they needed to be waked up sometimes.
Anybody else has this problem?

Beside that mine is working great ,feels great and i'm
sure they will sort the problems out soon.

I had tried various usb ports, and tried to give akai a call but there was no one in the office (sat i guess). Running it on live * so should run fine i thought, had tried the akai live (live 7) install that came with it,,,, no different.

There doent seem to be too many people with problems about so might be my setup.... anyway... will sort somthing out, just itching to get it going.

I AM HAVING SAME PROBLEM argggg the apc is completely useless. i hav 5 tracks open, one vsti and still...snap crackle pop...everytime i press the track select button OR the shift button and the arrow buttons. i have a 2.8 quad core intel with 4 gb of ram. I uninstalled the apc and of course...live works perfect...no pops nothing. Ableton didnt help for shit....thanks technical support...fine job Its not my usb port....come on now.. i am returning the piece of crap and getting something that actually is useable. Im sorry for the harsh words but come on now... i noticed that when u try and change tracks (on apc or using the mouse)...my cpu jumps to....ohhh 150% and pop cackle..audio drops out..etc.. great for live use.. wtf but as soon as i unplugged the apc... live was solid. sooo by by APC maybe ill buy it again once the bugs are fixed... rediculous :x :x

Had this same problem at first. Tech support said to try deleting my preferences file. It worked! You have to re setup your prefrences afterwords but its worth it.

May want to keep a copy of your old preferences file though, just in case it doesn't work. That way at the very least you dont need to resetup everything for nothing.

this worked for me last night on both my machines and for those experiencing install issues I had to uninstall and remove all usb devices to get the apc-40 recognised on my desktop (including labtec wireless mouse). On my laptop it installed straight away albeit with pops n glitches (now rectified). Apparently on XP there is some kind of limit to the number of midi drivers you can have installed. I know that in the hunt for perfect ergonomics I have tried and installed lots of controllers. The korg nano gear come with a utility for removing midi installs.

Re: APC 40 Shift key and Track Select causes audio glitches

Post by LesC » Thu Jul 16, 2009 5:03 pm

Having the same problem where the Shift key causes glitches in audio. Track Select buttons also cause glitches in audio. Funny, with APC connected, selecting tracks with the mouse also causes glitches but not when APC is disconnected. I tried deleting (renaming) preferences file as suggested but this did not solve the problem. Have unplugged other USB devices... used different USB cable and ports... Installing 8.0.4 now to see if that helps but I'm betting it wont. I wonder why Akai used the USB Audio CODEC for midi communications. The APC is not an audio device. Maybe all USB Midi devices use the USB Audio CODEC and I just didnt know it. Anyways, anyone found a solution to this problem? My newly built AMD quad core runs Ableton like a dream... a dream I've had for a long time. The APC is icing on the cake but not if it causes audio glitches. I've raised the audio buffer just to see if that helps and it doesnt. Wouldnt matter if that helped because I'm not sacrificing low latency for the APC.

Akai suggested installing the APC Edition of Live but I really dont want to do that. For one, I truly dont believe that edition has anything special about it that would resolve the problem. And even if it did, I'm not going to use that limited edition of Live so whats the point???

I'll post back if I find anything useful. If I cant find a solution looks like I'll have to drive two hours to Charlotte to return. Oh, and two hours back home... yay!

So some of you are having identical problems, but only one of you have mentioned your OS is PC based...Are the rest of you using a PC or Mac? Curious to know if this is some XP disease or universal OS retardedness.

Yeah, got it at GC. Was there with a friend who bought the Roland VG-99. Wasnt planning on buying the APC but since they had one, I couldnt resist... Really quite sad that its not working right, not to mention the long drive. Tried using onboard crappy sound card, same result unless you set the buffer ridiculously high. Its crazy to me that a midi device sending simple control messages should affect the audio signal. The Shift key shouldnt even be sending a message as it simply changes the function of other knobs and buttons on the hardware, but its the worst offender when it comes to the glitching.
