Exchanging warped files (.asd's)
Any forums where hard working Live useres can exchange warped files?

I was thinking maybe through iChat?? I've heard there aren't any problems using asd's across platforms but don't know if PC users on AIM can exchange files?? Might not want to shout about it if anyone finds somewhere. Big brother's always watching!

dunno if this will work, though this is based on my experience from a couple of years ago. i converted some waves to .apes and archived them to cd, and when they were converted back, the old .asds didn't work. perhaps things have changed, which would be cool since this is an excellent idea.
perhaps we should test it? find a cd a couple of people own and try it out?

you could take the .wav and .asd and compress it in a .zip file.
i've done several production collabs with a couple colleagues where i take an .als and the sounds folder (with .wavs and .asd's), compress it into a .zip - and send it either through Trillian messaging, or put it on my server for them to download. works on both PC and Mac, and the .als's and .asd's are always fine. Now we haven't traded entirely warped tracks over network - but based on sharing warped material that was used in tracks in general, it works.
also, for all you production junkies out there. i highly recommend this way of collaborating. It allows you to stay in your own space when creating but still work with other people. One guy i collaborate with, we can do a track a day this way. While i'm finishing one he is starting another, so we stay very productive. And sometimes i'll start a track and just get stuck, give it to a friend over my web server and they can take it an entirely new direction that i never would have. It really allows 2 control freaks to work together. you aren't fighting over the mouse or anything hehe.

Thats a great initiative. I actually suggested running a server to serve for Live collaborations. But at the time there wasn't much interest.AdamJay wrote:you could take the .wav and .asd and compress it in a .zip file.

How about now? I would suggest using AIM too.
doh - i misconstrued. i thought the idea was to only exchange the .asds. i've exchanged projects with others as well, with waves & asds with no problem.
i think it would be really useful to be able to share .asd only, which would require minimal server load. problem would be making sure the wave was ripped from the same cd, possibly even using the same software.

just in regards to your problems with using monkey's audio, I suspect this would be due to one little thing - file datestamp. If you look in monkey's options, there is a setting somewhere to make it preserve the original file date/time when going ape. Your asd files were probably freaking out because they have a specific definition of exactly which file they correspond to.Rx wrote:dunno if this will work, though this is based on my experience from a couple of years ago. i converted some waves to .apes and archived them to cd, and when they were converted back, the old .asds didn't work. perhaps things have changed, which would be cool since this is an excellent idea.

ah, me ole topic rears its head again - this time a few more takers. good to see.
i think the only way to do this successfully is to have the wav with the asd. ripping from the same cd, even using the same software is problematic. cos if you change the start/end position a little bit, you're going to have an incorrect .asd file.
ok, so it sounds like there are a few of us interested.
anyone have any space available on their site?
remember 1 wav == 50MB
10 x wavs == 500MB
Bod! did you have a good new year mate?

Nice one! That's more like it. Since asd's aren't copyrighted we'ld be free to swap as many as we liked. Regarding the wav files, if you speicfy which software you've ripped with and where you've downloaded you song information from (CDDB for example) then you shouldn't have any problem.........Rx wrote:doh - i misconstrued. i thought the idea was to only exchange the .asds. i've exchanged projects with others as well, with waves & asds with no problem.

..except different countries sometimes have different versions of an album released. Again you'ld have to specify this.
BTW, I've got the effects 'On' switch controlled by MIDI but I can't switch it off using the same button. Anyone know of a way round this? I'm using Live XL an a 15" Powerbook (256MB RAM) and the Evolution X-Session Controller.

i don't think trading the wavs would be kosher, but if it was done, i'd consider using bit torrent rather than find and pay for server space.
ideally, just .asds would be quicker, and perhaps we could come up with a standard in terms of ripping software & settings.
