You may have missed the grammar of the post. It stated that I missed the "prime" of the stone roses and Happy mondays which was late 80's.....
I lost touch with metal by the early 90's so I cant give a valid opinion regarding the prime.....
Metal has/had amazing musicianship and intensity.......I just found my self gravitating more to music that made my body want to dance, not slam or mosh.....
yeah I was pretty drunk last night. I like melodic metal that brings out the animalistic side of me.

I'd rather have my upcoming prostate exam my doctor is unsuccessfully trying to persuade me to do......
I'd rather listen to kanye west out takes.....
I'd rather see this topic hijack the thread for 5 pages....
I'd rather look at my 401k/ira statements......
I'd rather listen to my born again neighbors rhetoric.....

Oh and same era, Prinal Scream - go and buy screamadelica, it's a milestone.
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

I totally dug both of these bands. I love that long ass song "Breaking into Heaven" (i think) by The Stone Roses. I didn't see this thread until just now... I'm kinda surprised... I would have been scared to post it.

What I guess I'm saying here is that all of you who have posted in this thread have way better musical taste than I thought.

I remember The Pixies and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult blowing my mind around the same time as the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. With Smashing Pumpkins album Gish coming shortly thereafter... That was a good fukin album I don't care how much you hate. Nine Inch Nails only had one really good album back then too. As did 311 - Music was a phenomenal album.

life was different then....

I remember getting a rubbish quality copy of Pretty Hate Machine on cassette with no tracklisting or anything, and being blown away by it... I was a bit disappointed to find out later it was basically one bloke behind it all, I had imagined an anarchistic army of musicians working to overthrow the world...

That was my problem why I missed the Manchester era...I was heavily invested in the US music scene and also I was always in my own bands, so I put most of my energy into my own music. I am humbled and excited to dive into "new" music for me, and see where the muse takes me.

funny though :? I was into the spaceman 3 and hawkwind durring that time.....But I guess they were from different sides of the spectrum.

If you were American the 80's would have sucked massively, it was pretty awesome in the UK.

No doubt. I pictured that too. I was impressed that it was "one bloke" though, but only because it was/is such a good album

I agree these were dark times for the US.
"parading new hairdos" - you nailed it there.

Yep, TOTALLY. I want to thank you for your voice of reason because you are 100% correct. :D The 80s had it's strengths without question. Even though the movement clearly started in the 70s, can you say NWOBHM? Yeah MFers, that was the only stuff in the 80s. Lots of great old vinyl in that trunk. And yes, the UK as a whole outside it's lame ass popularmentary governed body of white washed, make up infested, left over stadium pompers, had some serious musical stones to throw.

In my (anything but humble twitafried) mind, Gary Numan remains one of my favorite artists of all time. I REALLY relate to Gary, always have and the stuff he has done over the last 20 years is even better than is imaginable until it's experience actually takes hold. He deserves so much more praise than he will ever receive.

MTV was an utter abomination to the American music culture. Can you say Boy George? MTV dealt a death blow by ushering in a musical consciousness likened to cocaine and plastic, spandex and hair spray. Completely artificial and corporately marketed. It was microwave music for the masses.
