Re: APC 40 FAQs, features and questions
Got mine on saturday but only got the time to try it today.
Here are my thoughts:
Knowing Akai history and the experience I had with Akai hardware in the past (I really really hated my buggy S6000) made me a bit weary.
So I hooked up the APC40 and tried some things without reading the manual. And hey presto! It worked without a problem. The first 60 minutes I had lots of fun remixen some tracks and in the end I was impressed to say the least. Akai made a device that worked as promised without needing a couple of firmware updates.
It is unbelievable why this wasn't made (invented) before and how we all did do without it for playing live.
Genius stuff indeed.
Some negative issues:
- You need a AC/DC adaptor (included). It seems the USB cannot deliver the acquired power.
- The included USB cable is way to short.
- Ableton Live 8.03 sometimes crashes when adding vsti or vst plugins while playing. Only happens when you hookup the APC40 ! But this will be fixed I guess.
I have two words (and I never ever thought I would say this for a Akai device):
BUY IT!

Re: APC 40 FAQs, features and questions
Well, ok, I admit I AM considering purchasing this unit, if only as a phallic symbol..eldar wrote:doesn't help, WE use the APC!!![]()
(gotta compensate for nanoPenis)
However, I have a question. AFAIK, an audio rack can only control 8 parameters per instance of a VST (say, Guitar Rig 3).
1. Am I wrong about this?
2. If not, does bank switching on the APC40 give more banks of a VST, or does it only apply to Live instruments?
(I guess I'm really wishing for a union of Automap 3.1 and Live (sigh)...
Re: APC 40 FAQs, features and questions
I've only just begun creating my own racks so i'm not really qualified to answer this definitively but as far as i can see 8 macro controls is the limit per channel/rack.
BUT: say you got an audio track and insert Guitar Rig without the Live rack feature, you'd have 8 banks of 8 parameters each, which you could access without touching the mouse! (so in short, yes to question no 2).
And even if go the "rack route"...who needs more than 8 realtime tweakable parameters anyway?

... Hey GlobalSubSonics,
What is the stand that your APC is sitting on?
(I'm in the market for something similar!)
Cheers.

Buleriachk, 8's the limit of controls you can map over to the macro's on the effect rack (and subsequently control remoely with the APC40), yes. Of course, you can have many 'pages' of effects and racks on any given track, there's a little shift left and shift right arrow button beneath that bank of knobs on the lower right, with that you can easily bounce between effects and racks.

Not sure if this video has been posted already, but here is some pretty interesting ideas on other ways to use/configure your APC:

But I would need a separate instance of the VST for each rack, right?

Re: APC 40 FAQs, features and questions
I have an issue i cant' figure out, when i go to map my my apc40 i can remap all controls except for the 4 bansk on top that are assigned by default to pans and sends, Live, doenst seem to pick up on my apc movements are reassing em...
Im trying to map EQ3 on audio track 1 on the top row horizontal, and EQ3 on Audio track 2 on the bottom row , on bank a, if that makes a difference? All other controls respond though.
Any thoughts?
thanks! i think this is my first post
