You're committing the same sin the guy who wrote the article made... you are assuming that everyone uses Live the same way you do.

I don't DJ at all and still find Live's Session view to the best way to quickly prototype a song. These are songs in a fairly standard rock configuration (drums, bass, guitar, vocals, keys). I'm actually using the built-in instruments in Suite because A) They sound good enough for my purposes and B) Built-in instruments within Ableton are going to be much more stable within Live than VST instruments. If you don't want the add-on instruments, you don't have to buy the Suite. Individually the instruments may not be as good as Specialized Product X That Costs 4-5 Times As Much, but at least for me, I find them to be a good value when bought bundled with the Suite.

Ableton is obviously trying to broaden the appeal of their product by adding additional functionality. If you don't want the extra functionality, don't upgrade. I know one guy who is happy with Live 6 and sees absolutely no reason to upgrade.

The builtin instruments sound excellent if you know what you're doing. I was asked for the plugin I used several times before and guess what.... the answer was OPERATOR in all of the cases!

Most plugins will sound "better" because they already use a lot of FX in their presets, that's why some people still stick to the "ableton's native instruments don't sound professional" bullshit. Besides that, all instruments have their own characteristics, good and bad depend on the usage and the song surrounding the instrument.

I am not going to waste time to read this whole thread and this has prolly been said but...

I quit reading this blog post by page 2 because if you think groove templates are useless and don't know what a transient is then you and I prolly take way different approaches to making music.

It seems you want the DAW to be more simple. Don't go try going and squash my updates just because you dunno what a transient is homie. If you don't care about this stuff stick with version 6.

My bad, I took "but actually making tracks with the built in instruments? uh, no?" literally.

what they have in common is the same quality of blah, though.

yesterday i have posted a comment in his blog which was something like "please stop criticizing with your superficial knowledge".
he did not let the comment go through.

OMG, ableton doesn't even come with a complete library of premade loops and midi beat patterns either! Are they seriously expecting us to have to write all the music out note by note?!

contrast this to the threads where people ask the install is so huge.

the guy claims that he's 'a musician first and foremost,' ummmmm what??

LMAO

A lot of people like/love being assisted.

I love to build my own set for drums, synths or whatever.
Presets are sometimes useful to start, to get inspired or just to learn how the sound was settled but rarely [never?] used as such with no modification at all.

Let be creative god damn

My waste of money will come on the next week [monday or tuesday I hope]

the only presets i ever touch are the ones that mimic real instruments. y'know, pianos, stand up bass, strings, shit like that. Everything else gets tossed into the trash instantly. I got involved in electronic music because of the open ended nature of sound design in the medium, why would i want to avoid that?

im guessing from your reply that you aren't a professional user. what people like you don't understand is that professionals don't have that kind of time to waste.
