APC40 with Bome question
APC40 with Bome question
So tonight I tried playing around with using Bome (the classic/freeware version)to add some functionality to my new APC 40. It was killing me that no "undo" function was available from the device, so I routed the signal through Bome to remap my "Nudge -" button to a "Ctrl z" keystroke. Worked like a charm...or so I thought. I started getting weird tempo behavior, and finally realized that the Nudge button was still coming through to Ableton as a signal to Nudge, only it wasn't toggling off within Ableton. In other words, I use my new "Undo" button once, and the nudge icon in Ableton stays lit up until I close Live.
Anyone else trying to do something along these lines? Maybe there's an obvious solution that I'm missing here?
TIA...

Re: APC40 with Bome question
I assume that in addition to using Bome like you are, you could simply map the nudge button to something benign.

Re: APC40 with Bome question
Might be easier to use this: http://midistroke.mac.findmysoft.com/
Here's an example of how i use it, you could also apply it to the APC40, as suggested, make sure the button you assign is assigned to something irrelevant in Live first:
open midistroke, click + button on left hand side. Enter 1 in the firt column (this assigns CC1 to the stroke)
Enter 1 in the channel box, to tell it to listen to channel 1 (setting it to 0 makes it listen on all channels)
leave the value field blank.
Go to the right box, with the first line still highlighted, click the + sign on the right, enter Z in the keystroke box, select the Apple sign box so that a cross appears in the box.
Leave it running in the background, go back to Live.
Move the knob assigned to CC1 on my Virus ti, it undoes the last change i made. (an example is where i deleted a clip, moving the CC1 knob, makes it undo the delete action.

I would still be interested in a do-once and forget solution involving only the APC40, but frankly the APC40 along with PK Squared (which has an UNDO/REDO fuction, among other things) is good for now.

Re: APC40 with Bome question
ableton needs to add a list in Live's midi map mode for keystrokes. or just give us the ability to go into midi map mode, click or right click on the midi map list in a blank space, and choose which command we want to assign, then choose the control.
Re: APC40 with Bome question
Can anybody tell me what's the differnce betwenn Midistroke and Bome's Midi trabslator?
Re: APC40 with Bome question
um....yeah. Must have been tired last night, that's a pretty obvious fix, innit?anamexis wrote:I assume that in addition to using Bome like you are, you could simply map the nudge button to something benign.
I'll give that a shot later today and post back.
Re: APC40 with Bome question
Well for one, MIDIstroke is Mac-only, so I can't say much more about it (I'm on PC).maze23a wrote:Can anybody tell me what's the differnce betwenn Midistroke and Bome's Midi trabslator?
I will say that the freeware version of Bome seems to do exactly what I was looking for, with very little hassle. Only tricky part was figuring out the need to re-route the APC's output through a virtual MIDI port...once that was in, the rest was easy.

And did you manage to route it "serially" into the virtual port and have Live still recognize it (with the red grid ring)?
The trouble I'm having is that I can't get around the auto map.
à la this video.

You see how he managed to disable or "detach" the default functions of the clip matrix?
Any ideas?
Re: APC40 with Bome question
ya, once you have midi routed thru bome's virtual midi port, you can swallow the nudge signal by checking the box in "incoming". that will stop nudge from getting thru to ableton and only do Ctrl-Z.
Re: APC40 with Bome question
I think that bome's is reading the "note on" from your nudge button to do the keystroke, but you still have a "note off" thats still passing through to ableton. You'll need to swallow both sides of the button press, even if you only use one side for your command.

Re: APC40 with Bome question
I can get bomes working with my other midi gear... but for some reason when I try to select the APC's in/out ports I get the following error:
Cannot open MIDI input device "Akai APC40":
There is not enough memory available for this task. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try a
Anyone have any thoughts on that?
I have a gig of memory to spare.

Re: APC40 with Bome question
I assume you are running in windows. Are the APC's ports already open in another application? On my system, the APC's drivers will only allow one application to access them at a time (unlike the midiyoke virtual ports). If not, how many midi ports are installed in your system including virtual ports?

Re: APC40 with Bome question
Yeah, I figured it out. Have to do some funky routing via virtual ports.
