He's just an hyped up 'superstar' deejay who pretends to be a producer. :D

Not according to Charlie May.. he actually discussed this in an interview on xpander.nl a while back. Saying that so many people assume Sasha can't work his way around a studio, but in fact he's really a great producer.

Regardless, Sasha's track selection is what was so amazing. I'm not as into his ableton sets, or really even what he's done in recent years. But stuff like this Tyrant set in 1997 are killer! Even if the beatmatching isn't perfect, the tracks are absolutely great. IMO, that makes a more lasting impression.

Personnely I think all this Sasha bashing should stop. Give the guy a break. He's pioneering a new way for all Dj's with Ableton, without him stuff like this would still be frowned upon..."Djing with a laptop, but thats cheating". He's done more for the industry than you proberly realized: Started the idea of DJ nights (away form the urban sprawl) for proper clubbers (to sort the real clubbers from the bear monkeys or DJ spotters) and between him and diggers launched the idea of mix cd's (renassaince!)...and production..okay so Airdrawndagger left something to be desired (expect Requim..IMHO) But xpander...Hello! voted a top 10 dance track of all time! You telling me he doesn't know production. Okay so he might have lost his way, but without him many of us would never have got into music, let alone DJing. And with the new stuff he's doing he's only pushing the envelope further and laying foundations for the future DJ's to build on.

There are a lot of people in this forum who critisize Sasha and BT, I don't know if it's jealousy or what it is. Maybe they're all into glitch or industrial. I find that even in his DJ sets, what makes Sasha different is his incredible knack for melody. Many people didn't like Airdrawndagger; I found it beautiful, melodical. Perhaps the people critisizing Sasha also find Bernstein, Barber, and Copland boring. Writing or "arranging" good melodies is truly a gift not to be taken lightly. I wish I had better melodical sense. That's why I listen to Bernstein and Sasha, to try to learn from them.

FYI.....

Sasha is/was a classically trained pianist.

1 or 2 tracks on Global underground Ibiza didn't sound right when mixed, so he changed the key there were in(using Pro Tools).......how many other Dj's would do that...or just select a different track...or mix them in anyway....regardless of key!

Requim.....That track was written/made on Sept 11th...after they'd watched for 6hrs the horrors of that day they couldn't watch anymore so Sasha, Charlie May and JXL went into the studio and produced that track...personnelly it's the most beautiful track I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot!) and always makes me smile at the end (it should be issued to depression sufferers!...listen to once daily!) For something that beautiful to come from that day! Thats compassion and skill! Sasha has no production skills.......yeah right!

Well, it's geting better and better on this forum, now Sacha is put in the same bag as Copland and Bernstein ! Please give us a break with that kind of simplification ! Yes DJs can be great musicians, but composing for a symphonic and djaying ARE NOT THE SAME and will never be...
BTW I gave a listen to the Sacha's track someone posted here : no comment. :-)

Ive seen Sasha bent like an accountant over his Live laptop in large disappointed clubs. Did him no favours.

Worse still, we know he used to be a genius tune picker and FX'r. And now he is getting lost.

No sympathy though. He has made more money than 99% of any of us will ever make as FX'd cut'n'paste DJs.

Where is Global Goon? That guy just breathes inspiration.

Sasha is like a Friend's re-run where Joey loses the baby.

Its simple really ......... compare the 'music' sasha has produced to someone like Moodyman or Charles Webster. Sasha makes music for people in clubs to take drugs to ..... the others i mentioned combine soul, jazz or funk with some chilled out beats creating a beautiful for of dance music with is original.

Sasha's music has evolved from rave ...... and here in Dublin its considered mainstream and is supported by kids & pill poppers.
mainstream music is usually rubbish no matter what genre of music it is .... true 'dance music' lovers can never be into what Sasha does or what he stands for!!!

Ok, I'm into Carl Cox and Derrick May as well as Sasha, but I can't say that either of thinks "orchestrally" the way that Sasha and BT do. I'm saying that Sasha's melodic ear is exceptional, maybe not eveyone's bag. That's ok, I know there are lovely Country/Western tunes that aren't my bag.

I think it is more his hamfisted entrapment with Live as a performance tool that we are discussing.
He's lost his grip on the crowd in a club situation by overextending himself trying to use Live in a realtime situation.

I reckon he should just spin his favourite discs (with some FX thrown in) and we anoraks will love him again.

IMHO

Plus, I think his studio album is excellent. I'm just questioning his Live live thing.
