I only used the demo during 2 weeks...
I just remember to set a long attack on the comp + short release_ you can try with long release too.
For starting I used the preset named Flattenator, then I just configured a bit for suit my sounds and the gate.
Also tried gate before or after compressor.
Well maybe I misunderstood you, not sure.
As you can see, It was a tremendous Test period for me.
I'm going around everytime on this forum by waiting!
