Ableton > Logic?

Post by PLacidBasilisk » Mon Jun 15, 2009 11:03 pm

A copy of Logic Pro 8 recently came into my possession and although I am loyal to Ableton, temptation overcame me and I decided to give it a go. After reading through the basic beginner level "getting-started" manual I started to really like some of the features. Now since Ableton is the only DAW I've ever had experience with (besides a short-lived affair with Fruity Loops in my younger days), it has pretty much defined my music-making experience so far and in many cases I believed, perhaps naively, that the way it's done in Ableton is the best and/or only way.

Not true it seems. There's a whole lot of things that seem to make more sense in Logic. One thing in particular which blew me away and seems so obvious now is the super-tweakability of event positions and values which allows for an amazing level of precision.

Now before you cry treason let me say I'm not going dismissing Live and it will always be number one. I just wonder if anyone else has had any life-changing experiences such as this where their musical horizons and perception expanded after trying a different DAW.

Live definitely needs an overhaul in the event automation department, thats for sure.

I prefer Logic as my main DAW but I usually have Live rewired so I get what I want from both.

My life changing experience was experiencing LIVE after being a solid Cubase user for years. Live's on the fly creativity and session view just revolutionalized my composition and arrangement workflow, as opposed to building things up from a blank linear timeline as in Logic and Cubase. Don't get me wrong though, I am still a Cubase fan and user and use both programs.

Of recent GarageBand and my new iControl have consumed most of my time. It has put Session view into perspective, highlighted Live LE's limitations, and given me less to think about while playing and making music.
