Using Reason
What does everyone think about using Propellerheads Reason to record Audio? I know its a great tool for electronic music, but im considering buying it and doing a rewire with ableton. But i want something highly versatile that i can use alongside with Ableton to do alot of recording. Like Guitar tracks and stuff, and still have the capability to do all these other things.
Im really stuck in at a fork in the road when it comes to finding a secondary DAW to use alongside Ableton.

Re: Using Reason
Reason doesn't record. Maybe you mean "Record" the new product by Propellerhead?

Re: Using Reason
I was looking at that actually. And well, i was thinking of Reason because i LOVE what it has to offer. But ableton can kinda do the same thing (KIND OF).
I need a good DAW for actual recording. Cant find one. something i can use alongside ableton. If thats even possible.

Re: Using Reason
Reason and Live is a great combo, as long as you understand Rewire in and out. The routing possibilities with the two are great, think of it like analog, reason being your instruments and ableton being your mixer and recorder

Re: Using Reason
Thats true, very good point.
But is ableton up to par in terms of quality of recording. I know it does a damn good job, but Recording a band like a metal band or something is maybe not its forte, same with mastering. But it can still pull it off.

Re: Using Reason
ABLETON's sound is good.
Only maybe pro tools is better,
reason doesnt record and record by propellerhead will more than likely have the same audio engine as reason which to be honest sucks.
You really should just record into ableton

Re: Using Reason
I like Cubase for straight up recording. I guess you can then use Ableton as a rewire into Cubase if you want. For my needs, recording and running Live are pretty different purposes, but that's a cool thing about Live is that so many people find different uses for it.

don't waste your money on reason.
take that cash and buy the NI synth package. you'll get uch higher quality sound out of that and ableton.

Re: Using Reason
the engine just doesn't sound as good. its weak. NI's synths just have the quality that reason lacks.
i used reason for years. i can make better everything with 1 instance of massive than i can with all of reason's equipment.

this kind of talk is a bunch of garbage. people love to slam to reason with useless, baseless criticism like this. THOR, NNXT, Malstrom all have a great sound to them. it also depends on what you do with them. evidently this guy prefers Massive's presets over Thor's. whatever.
from my angle, Reason is a great library of instruments. don't buy this typical BS about it "simply sounding crappy." notice that posts like this never say anything useful, just "it sounds bad" "the engine is bad" etc etc......bottom line, try to hear it for yourself, and you decide.
NI stuff is certainly great, no argument there. but reason gets a bad rap for some, uh, reason. ha.

I love reason and have used it for since 1.5. The synths are amazing... But reasons audio engine is not up to par with the rest.mholloway wrote:Superchibisan wrote:the engine just doesn't sound as good. its weak. NI's synths just have the quality that reason lacks.

Re: Using Reason
please don't listen to mhalloway.
mhalloway, i never use presets. every sound i make is built from the ground up. i know how to use maelstrom. i need 4 instances of maelstrom in order to equal the sound quality of 1 instance of massive. when i got to the end of my run with reason, i was having to chain 3-6 synths together to get the sounds i wanted. and even then, the sounds were flat, dull, and generally not-shiny.
with massive, and fm8, the two synths i use exlusively at this point, i've been able to make mindblowing sound designs. thick, rich, analogue rivaling sounds.
reason is not the catch-all unfortunately. it takes lots of different tools to get a great sound and dropping 400 bucks on reason is not economical, compared to teh 200 bucks it takes to get 4 ni synths that can do much much more.

Re: Using Reason
the only negatives for reason are workflow and lack of audio support
other than that i thought the sound quality was amazing while i still enjoyed using the program
