Ear Issues, Anyone?

Post by scott nathaniel » Wed Jun 17, 2009 3:39 am

So, about two months ago I developed an ear infection. After a month of on and on clogging and pain I finally went to the doc. He said it was a fungal infection, similar to swimmers ear. He said it was mainly caused by excess moisture. Since then, I've had the infection reoccur on four different occasions. I realized they seem to come when I've been using headphones excessively. I live in the Mojave desert, so moisture has never been an issue, but I think the sweat from the headphone use is causing the infections. Anyone have this issue? It sucks because I do most of my playing at night and phones are essential for that. It's Murphy's law that a musician's most important organ is the ear and it's the thing that we fuck the most. I'm switching to water colors.

I don't know about you, but I certainly don't enjoy doing lobe!

Yea, I hear ya though, my left ear has been in constant torture from loudness and getting syringing etc... I hope I still have a new drum in there

damn that sucks. Would using ear buds most of the time and cans when only critical listening is needed help?

I'm in the same boat, I'm actually also on number 4 in the last 2 months.... I'm using a suspension blend of 'Neomycin, Polymyxin B Sulfates and Hydrocortisone, USP'. It works like a charm in 1 1/2 day, but then I always stop taking it too early and the infection comes back (yes I have fears of using drugs in my ear that might deaden my sense of hearing)

Doc gave me acetic acid drops. They help in the short term but this is a fairly new issue and it seems to be approaching a chronic state.

Are you using closed ear headphones? If so you could try changing to the open design which should let your ear breath a bit more...

BTW I read your thread because I have been suffering from tinnitus for the past 2 months. It isn't bad but it is a little annoying. I got a hospital appointment in 2 weeks time... see what they say.

I've had the condition for over 20 years, it is impossible to get rid of totally, you need to keep the ear canal dry, if you excercise a lot you will start it off, washing the ears can start it off, stress can start it off, what you eat can start it off, using earphones can start it off. Anything that makes you sweat can start it off. I've had many bacterial ear infections due to me using the blunt end of a needle to poke around in my inner ear canal to try to relieve the torturous deep inner ear itching that it causes, it truly is torture. At times I've felt like ripping my ears off. Anti fungal tablets will only provide a tempory cure, it will come back. I believe that it is due to some people naturally having more fluid in the inner ear, and this encouraging the ideal condition for fungal growth. You just need to keep it in check to stop it spreading to the brain. A few years ago I started getting nasty sharp piercing pains around my temples area, I had extensive tests and was found to have a fungal infection of the brain requiring high dose anti fungal treatment, apparently I was lucky I did not leave it longer as it would of probably killed me, the doctor believed the infection had spead from the inner ear to the brain.

Man, sorry to hear about the ear troubles. I lost most of my hearing in my left ear as a child because doctors kept me on amoxycillin for too long. My mom lost her hearing in both ears from hydrocodone abuse. Be careful.
