I attached some mini binaural mikes to my fingertips (from here: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-b ... y/110/mics), going into an Edirol R09 recorder and monitoring it with some in-ear earphones.
Gives all sorts of weird spatial effects when you point the mikes away, and bring them close together.
Typing while wearing them was an interesting experience.

any location stuff I've done has been with a Marrantz recorder and the Rode NTG-1 boom kit
using the boom is heaps of fun with headphones on because you point it at things and hear them then move away and they disappear! loads of fun for stoners......
I would think the H4 at very least because it has XLR ins
But I can't say I wasn't tempted by that other thread where the H2 is $159
Re: So, how are YOU using your portable recorder?
I have an Edirol R-09 (the first model), this thing has done me sterling service, i've lost the power adapter at gigs a couple of times and had to replace it twice ($50). I mainly use it when mixing FOH to record shows for the artists, take a bus mix, or set up an aux mix, add a couple of ambient mics to the mix. Then after the show, the artist can just pop the SD card in their laptop and copy the 24bit file across. works great, very convenient. As I go i just back up the shows on a 2.5" usb hard drive, with a spare 2gb card for longer shows...
I also use it on the road to capture interesting stuff that's going on, marching bands, marketplaces, protests...it also is a real easy way to capture dialogue for interviews, and note-taking at meetings....definitely an essential part of the audio toolkit now, along with the phonic paa2, xlr turnarounds, groundlift adapters, cans and digital camera for analog mixer snapshots!
