kaoss pad midi control of filters etc

Post by funkyape » Wed Jun 17, 2009 1:07 pm

I'm trying to use an old kaoss pad as a midi controller for audio filters etc in Live 8. However I don't know what i'm doing wrong but both the X and Y values of the pad - seem to match/change together. In midi mapping - both say pitchbend and I dont know of a way to change this to a specific CC number? It seems to go to try and go to CC2 but seems to snap-back into pitchbend? Any thoughts?

hi, i have a kp3 so i dont know if yours is an older version..but with the kp3 editor it is easily sorted out:it lets you decide what cc numbers the pad is sending out, and to decide the way in which the pad sends these messages (with a bit of very useless stuff IMO).i guess there must be an editor for the kp2 too..
anyway, the best is to disable all cc's except the main x and y axis (and maybe the touch if you want to trigger fx on-off) so you wont get crazy with 8 cc's coming out on every hand movement..hope it helps
MBP 13", Live Suite 8.2.7, Remote SL 25, LaunchPad, SL mkii 49, APC 20, Access Virus A, OctaTrack, MachineDrum, Blofeld...

Thanks for your help. It is the original 1st Kaoss pad? Where are you getting the editor - did it come with KP3 or downloadable? Alternatively is there a way I can turn off CC in Live as there are very limited controls on the original kaoss pad?!

If it's anything like my Kaoss pad, it's probably sending both the X and Y position whenever you touch it, so it makes difficult to "learn" it in Live.

What you want to do is disable the X axis control, then go into learn mode in Live, and teach it the Y movement. Then enable X, disable Y and teach Live the X movement. I forget exactly who it is done, but there is a programming mode on the Kaoss pad where each of the buttons toggles a single MIDI paramter.

[Edit] Yeah, hold down the Tap/BPM button and the Rec/Stop button for a second, and then it will go into MIDI Edit mode. Press the program buttons along the top until they are all out, except for Program #5 (Y axis). Do the MIDI learn thing in Ableton. Then do the same thing, but this time turn off all but Program #4 button (X axis). Learn whatever controller you want for the X axis in Live. Finally, go to MIDI learn mode and turn everything back on again.

Wow - that is exactly my problem and thanks for the detailed instructions, that's awesome. You are a legend!

i got an kp1 as well and use it for the same purpose... just stroke very quickly on the left edge from up to down for the one axis and left to right on the very bottom edge of the field... this way it only recognise the either X or Y value... the editor is not really needed for that. you basically use the edge to let your finger just move straight into only one direction... sort of like a rail... that keeps your finger stroke in place.

I think you have the 2nd version - as I have the original one (and dont have a 'Tap/BPM' button)? So thanks - but it didn't work.

Thanks for the suggestion - but it didn't work? It was still outputing both as pitchbend into Live - no matter how careful I was. I googled a copy of the 'manual' (2 pages?!) and am following the instructions about transmission and routing x and y movement to controllers 12&13 - which Live seems fine with, However it seems live will only except either x or y movement not both (basically whichever was the last one I mapped is the one it will work with?) I've tried having different midi channel numbers for x and y and I've tried other controller numbers but same thing happens? Any suggestions.....?

don't be carefull!!! wipe quickly the less thinking involved the more accurate you will swipe in only one direction and therefor trigger only either the X or Y output.

trust me, i had problems as well... always trying to do it perfect... just swipe... wrooom...
