OT: Let's hate on inept UPS delivery guys
Re: OT: Let's hate on inept UPS delivery guys
one aspect I DO have to worry about is what happens on the recieving end. we put labels on every package which say "ATTN SHIPPER: BOX WILL RATTLE"
because in our experience, a lazy driver will often (especially at a remote address) say "fuck it, this box sounds like the contents are broken" and just return it without ever trying to deliver it, or at least not try for a second delivery if nobody was home the first time

I work for Fedex, and we made a name for these guys... from time to time we have to use them for returning some of our equipment when our vendors only use UPS, anyway, we call em 'bad news brown'
they always come in talking to someone on their cell phones whos way more important than their customer... you cant even coax an answer to any question outta these guys

Re: OT: Let's hate on inept UPS delivery guys
UPS has been fantastic where I live nowadays, but back in college it was a different story. I remember getting the first three movies from the Alien Quadrilogy (I only acknowledge the first three movies, Resurrection was like watching an abortion for two hours). I was excited as hell because those are some of the best special editions of movies ever to be released, so I was waiting around the house that day for the delivery. I see the UPS driver pull up, come halfway up my front walk, and then from about 30 feet away he just unceremoniously flings the package with my DVD's through the air, bouncing off of my front door with a nasty 'thud.' I opened up the package and most of the plastic pieces that were glued into the inside of the DVD sleeves were snapped completely off and the discs were floating around getting scratched.
It wasn't an expensive synth or anything, but that hurt.

I just ordered a new computer and had the parts delivered to my house from UPS. Woke up one morning to find a pile of boxes outside my front door. Don't know how long they had been there, but someone could have so easily picked them up and walked away with them. No phone calls or anything from UPS
Re: OT: Let's hate on inept UPS delivery guys
I feel your pain. Just sent a box of books from Brooklyn to the west coast and it arrived 1/3 of the weight I sent it. I knew something was up after feeling the weight at the counter so I opened it there in front of them. Sure enough, I was missing all but a handful of the books (first editions and art stuff) valued around 3g's.
The crap part is I didn't insure it, which is crazy, since I send 50 or so packages a month and always insure them. I don't think the lady in BK (USPS) office even asked if I wanted it insured, still my fault, but I was major sleep deprived a gig there and rushing to the airport.

ever tried making an insurance claim on a package? it's not worth it
we had a few packages get destroyed BECAUSE THE FEDEX TRUCK CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED EVERYTHING ON BOARD.
1) they never even called or attempted to notify anyone that their packages were lost.
2) they are still going to make me jump through all these hoops to prove how much the thing was worth. motherfuckers, I paid to insure it for $500. you destroyed it. give me the money

I can confirm this with relation to USPS (never had to do a claim with UPS). I traded someone my Korg ER-1 for another drum machine many years ago, and according to the recipient, the ER-1 arrived at its destination with a hole driven straight through it. It returned to me and sure enough, it looked like someone drove a piece of rebar through the thing in some kind of rage fit. I filed a claim with UPS and of course it was a no-go, even though the damage clearly happened in transitlongjohns wrote:ever tried making an insurance claim on a package? it's not worth it
It seems that sending expensive items is basically nothing better than a crap-shoot with these companies.

well I got my package and I'm pretty sure the guy got a pretty embarrassing slap on the wrist, so I guess that should be enough. Hopefully he's learned. No point in pursuing anything more severe.
