Live 8 crashes, I lose an hours work.

Post by tigali » Sat Jun 20, 2009 5:41 pm

I probably shouldn't post right now as I am so angry I should probably wait to calm down but fuck it. I just had Live 8 crash on me twice. The first time I lost nearly an hours work and the second time I was trying to redo the work I spent that hour doing. I am using Logic for my next few jobs. Sort this shit out Ableton, it's gettin so I can't even trust the program to do a basic fucking job. Nothing complicated here, we're talking BASIC fucking stuff.
When it crashed I was recording audio in from my outboard echo unit. Nothing else.

Okay. Red mist has cleared a little. I wasn't just recording audio, I was also automating pan in one of the clip envelopes (the one I was recording into). And my main problem is that Live won't open the project I was working on unless I say no to retrieving the last stuff I was working on. It opens the project and promptly crashes again before I can do anything unless I choose "No" to "Would you like to retrieve..." so it's a double pain in the ass.
But I am using Logic from now on until you get this shit sorted out. I will check back regularly to see how the updates are going but I really don't have enough hours in my week for this. I have two jobs and a baby and this shit kills me. I haven't bothered updating to 8.04 because the updates take so long and there are still major problems with .04 so I'll wait til .08 or something.

i lost an hour of work resulting from a cut & paste crash a month ago and haven't felt safe using any revision of 8 since

writing music isn't a whole lot of fun when this stuff happens

I'm in the very lucky position of having splashed out on Logic a few months ago as back up for this very situation. Today is Logic Day. I intend spending a couple of hours going through the lessons and seeing how painful the transition will be. I love Live but if it doesn't work then I haven't much choice, I need to get shit done.

Seriously -- and I can't recover half the time since the recovered set crashes very time. Ableton really needs to sort this shit out.

Am I the only person who hits CMD+S every few minutes? I must have been paranoid about saving when i was first getting into computer based music, because I save A LOT when working on important stuff.

I'm also now have the habit of cmd+s every minute or so. Especially using non-native plugins when mixing, because i seem to get more crashes when i'm dropping plugs around.

It is super frustrating though when auto-retrieve doesn't want to work...

whoa, it's bad juju mentioning that when people are having horror crashes!
but yes, I do it reflexively, although I'm more of a ctrl & shift & s person . Save as. filename with a date and an alphabetic variant

but that's no consolation to people who lost work.
it's good to have a safety net, but you really hope not to need it.

i'm with tarekith - save constantly. i've had live 8 crash quite a bit, and while the restore function may or may not work( e.g. result in another crash) it *never* has trouble re-loading the last save.

so, yeah, just hit cmd-s reflexively....it's the safest way.

still, sure, crashes are crappy.

computers crash, that's what they do.

jesus saves, you should too.

I think ALL of us have lost gems to the crash demons, I consider them offerings to the muses.

I hit Cmd+S regularly enough, but don't you know it's when you're in the middle of a complex envelope automation editing session and getting in so deep that you haven't hit Cmd+S for about half an hour that the crash happens. Offerings to the muses? Yeah, that's one way of looking at it. Auto-retrieve shit should work is another tho.
