seriously

i hit 40% with my machine tweaked. in comparison to you, i got the w500, t9600, 7200rpm, 4gb ram, xp sp3, edirol ua-101.

you spent a lot less.

1. 4-core systems have the same or better results than 8-core
2. about 20% CPU load on 4 or 8 cores with this easy test - some samples and 16 reverbs is definitely TOO MUCH!!!
the thing is, ableton displays the most loaded core of all available, so it can easily be like one core running at 20% and others at less than 20%, which could be clearly seen in task manager which shows the real cpu load as well.

on the rights of a feature request, live needs multicore cpu meter!

1 ) Ableton Live CPU Meter % - 130!!
2 ) Laptop/Desktop? Make/Model? - Laptop, Apple MacBook
3 ) Operating System? - OS X 10.5.6
4 ) Ableton Live version? Live 8.0.4
5 ) CPU Make, Model, and Speed? - Intel Core Duo, 2.0Ghz
6 ) Amount of Ram? - 2GB
7 ) Soundcard (and driver version if you know it)? - Built In
8 ) Hard Disk Drive Speed (if you know)? 5400 RPM

Something can't be right. At work a Dual G5 outperformed my MacBook. Even at 2 tracks it's playing back at 70%! Seem like other MacBook are around 60-70% for all 8 tracks. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter oscillates between 29-30% (can I use that as an LFO? )
2) Desktop Mac Pro (purchased July '07).
3) OS X v10.5.7
4) Ableton Live version 8.0.4
5) 2x2.66GHz DualCore Intel Xeon (i.e., two processors, with two cores each. so, 4 cores total)
6) 5GB Ram (667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMMs)
7) Soundcard is Metric Halo ULN2
8 ) OS+apps are on 250GB 7200RPM Western Digital SATA internal drive. Files are on 500GB 7200RPM Seagate SATA internal drive.
9) 8 playback tracks

Could someone tell me... when you are using multiple processors (or multiple cores), what is the max range of the CPU meter? i.e., is it 200% for dual processors (or cores), 400% for quad processors (or cores)?

I think that's an interesting comparison to my results (posted just above). You have about a 34% improvement. I think it's probably mostly due to the memory speed. However... What exactly do you mean by "quad"? Do you mean one quadcore processor? or do you mean two dualcore processors totaling 4 cores? or do you mean two quadcore processors totaling 8 cores?

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter: 33%
2) Laptop/Desktop Make/Model: DIY PC
3) Operating System: Windows XP SP2 (32bit)
4) Ableton Live version: 8.0.4
5) CPU Make, Model, and Speed: Intel, Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.40Ghz
6) Amount of Ram: 3.4Gb @ 667MHz
7) Soundcard: EMU 0404 PCI
8 ) Hard Disk Drive Speed: 7200RPM
9) Number of playback tracks: 8

I called this my budget quadcore when I put it together, but a year later it's still running great. Even when I bring the sampling rate down to my usual settings for lower latency (8.37ms) the CPU meter only goes up to 37%. I can cope with that. At those settings I get audio glitches at about 56-57% so unless I'm running a ton of soft synths with multiple effects on them I'm usually OK. The next system will be another quadcore, this time with a 64bit OS, a SSD drive, and a PCIe audio interface. I give the current system another year or so.
