Anger management - you should try it.
How is this a 'hater' thread ??? There's no mention of the word hate here, and are you the only one allowed to express an opinion on this board ?
I will enthuse all about W7 if and when it is up and running in full retail release to a good level. If it does, that still changes nothing about the facts that it has no new audio or MIDI features. Better memory management - yes and that will benefit many users. My Dell computer is only as amateur as you using a Realtek soundcard on your super DAW.
If you don't like my opinion, you can also leave or hit the 'new topic' button. I have the right to speak as much as you or anyone else.
For sure 512 samples is a reasonable latency for mixdown, besides many plugins will be compensated for which add more latency than this anyway.
This wasn't a personal attack on YOU. I was trying to present an opinion only, why you need to bring personal attacks into this - I don't know but I certainly ain't intimidated by it if that's what you're trying to do....and the rant about 'you with your superior equipment...' you are the one trying to proclaim your equipment is some kind of super hand built computer - that is known as hypocrisy.

I tried w7 too!
Im very impressed with the performance and the devices recognition!!!
Samsung monitor
Nvidia vga
All mainboard related drivers
TI firewire
bcr2000
edirol pcrm50
nanopad
Everything is working 100% without to install {myself} a single driver !
My only problem is with the profire drivers but this is an M-audio issue
Looking forward!

Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
You can already get the audio performance in Vista.
XP -> Vista was a total audio system rewrite.
Vista -> 7 the only audio changes I know of are related to DRM.
So either way, if you're upgrading from XP you'll get a good improvement no matter which OS you pick.

whatever you think about 7 live needs to be X64 bit already. does my head in that live is only using a frction of the 8 gig of ram i have.

Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
To clear up some confusion about x64 vs x32....
You can run 32 bit apps in a 64 bit os. The OS handles the RAM not the app. So running 32bit Live in a 64bit OS will allow you to use ALL the ram instead of the 4gb limit of a 32bit system.
Also, I said I'd report back on the sblive card thing: so far not good. I've tried 4 or 5 different drivers and none have worked. The closest I've come is forcing unsigned drivers to run using a "Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider" app. which is a shame .. I really liked the lil EMU10K1 chip on that card. It lasted a looooooong time and did some really cool junk back in its day. I'll continue testing and pounding on Win7 with Live (and a slew of Adobe apps. just got cs4 design suite)
@ Leeds- I think the opinion that you are a 'hater' creeps in when you say things like:
"When Apple release Snow Leopard, this advantage will also be hugely reduced and possibly eclipsed."
The advantage referring to the amount of addressable RAM. The association being that Mac will be better. You go on about how Mac is more midi advanced, etc. You have valid opinions but you're really Apple biased. This wasn't a thread about how Win7 was better than Mac, but you're post quickly degrades into Mac is better than (insert any MS product here) in the way and that.

Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
Interesting I will put this to the test, bit of a bonus if you are right as i just recently bought more memory. Its funny but when i originally chose a 64 bit os i assumed all the apps i used would use my ram but was then told i could only make use of more ram if i was using 64bit apps. So what is the point of a 64 bit app?
Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
Does anyone know if Win 7 allows for driver aggregation(I think that is the term)? It would allow for multiple(different) sound cards with different drivers to be accessed from within the host (Ableton, Cubase, Etc.). I read a small blurb at some point about this and can't recall what the answer was. And while Macs allow for this already, I'm not buying a Mac so please refrain from mentioning that.

Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
@Rosko- I should have been clearer about 'ALL' the ram. What I should have said was there is no 4 GB limit for the OS and apps anymore and 32bit Live will use ALL the RAM *AVAILABLE* to it (which is it's OWN 4GB since its a 32 bit app) It doesn't have to share it anymore.
If you have 16GB of RAM in your PC and you're running Live and Photoshop (32bit version) and Dreamweaver (32bit version) then the OS and system processes are going to take an amount (about 400MB in the case of a Win7 test box sitting next to me right now) and then
Live gets 4GB of its own space
Photoshop gets 4 GB of its own space
Dreamweaver gets 4GB of its own space
and none have to swap to disk.
In my opinion an optimal amount of RAM for a person using a 64 bit Windows OS and Live (and ONLY Live) would be 8GB. Live get's it's OWN 4GB without being bothered by the OS or other processes and the other 4GB can be used by the system junk and any VSTi's (If you have VSTi's that use gobbs of RAM then add more)
I hope I made it more clear instead of less clear. I now realize the way I said it the first time around was dumb on my part. PM me if you'd like pointers to some MS articles about how WOW64 (windows on windows NOT world of warcraft) works.
I hope people don't flock to Win7 thinking its going to be "the answer". It's not.
Win7 is in beta and still and has many many problems. I feel it is like working on a car when you're used to motorcycles. It can be painful and trying however I'm one of those people that chose to work in the field and have to make Macs and PCs and Unix and Linux and a plethora of OS's and hardware play nice together. AND when it works OH HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY!!!
I should take Leeds up on the 'start your own thread thing' instead of hijacking this one and turning it into a Windows 7 troubleshooting and informational thread. OP- my bad... sorry.

Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
I forgot the point of a 64 bit app part.
The point of a 64 bit app is that it can use beyond 4GB if it's programmed to. 64 bit apps also process twice as much information in the same amount of time as a 32 bit app. Like 64 lanes on a freeway instead of just 32 lanes. More cars can go at the same time as long as the app is written to take advantage of them.
The advantage of the 64 bit OS running 32 bit apps is... every app gets it's own 4GB of RAM.

Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
Well i just did a test, kontakt had problems at about 2.5 gigs giving an error message about running out of memory & then at 3.8 live crashed. it was a very crude test not sure why kontakt was struggling anyway all a bit pointless really.

Re: Windows 7 x64 is gonna ROCK for audio!!
I don't think Macs are better - if I did I would run them at home instead of my PCs. Both have advantages and disadvantages. I am definately turned off as much by rabid mac fanboys, trust me !
All I said was Mac OSX has some additional consideration for musicians - CoreMIDI and Coreaudio being 2 examples. Vista did bring WaveRT to the table, which in theory could be a great low latency driver, but it has seen very little support from 3rd party vendors, Echo have supported it and one or two others but not the majority. ASIO is still seen as the main low latency driver on PC and that's fine, but some vendors only support it reluctantly (i.e. Cakewalk, Sony Creative and Magix who natively support DX and/or WDM drivers), whereas on Mac, every vendor knows they better make their product very compliant to good CoreAudio performance. Microsoft could use an update to their MIDI and make one driver the standard - having conflicting MIDI standards benefits no-one.
The Snow Leopard reference is just a reminder that the Macintosh world will also soon see a proper 64 bit environment from top to bottom like Vista 64 or W7. I can't predict how well it will work out, only that the marketing reports look impressive. Running Macs every day, I also have frustrations and see flaws in their o/s and architecture too, trust me
Like I said, no hate either way. I use both systems. I feel disappointed that both platforms have not done more for the pro audio market specifically in recent times - it represents a significant niche market and affords opportunities to both MS and Apple to improve and claim market share.

Way cool. This could save me a ton of money on a Mac. I can use the leftover money on food and underwear.

Windows 7 it will be, at last, looking forward to 8 GB RAM.
It did win the award for fugliest OS on the planet again though
guess they'll never learn.
